Role Summary The Porter Manager is responsible for managing and supervising all portering and internal logistics services across St.

Michaels Hospital.

This includes ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of patient transport, internal messaging, waste management, theatre support, and related services.

The role also involves staff supervision, resource management, and continuous improvement of service standards.

The post holder will act as Deputy to the Facilities Manager in their absence, taking on operational decision-making and leadership responsibilities across facilities services.

The Porter Manager will work closely with: Facilities Manager direct line manager; deputises in their absence Portering/Orderly Staff supervision, training, and performance management Nursing and Medical Staff coordinating patient transfers, theatre support, and clinical service needs Administrative Staff ensuring timely delivery of documents, medical charts, and internal communications Catering, Cleaning, and Maintenance Teams coordination of supplies, waste management, and infection control Theatre, Radiology, Pathology, and Other Clinical Departments operational support for procedures and internal logistics Security Team collaborating on hospital safety, emergency response, and incident management External Contractors and Suppliers liaising on equipment, supplies, and operational support as required Key Responsibilities Manage day-to-day operations of Portering Services and supervise staff across all hospital areas.

Act as Deputy to the Facilities Manager, making operational decisions, prioritising activities, and coordinating services across departments.

Ensure timely patient transport, delivery of supplies, medical charts, and internal messaging.

Maintain high standards of hygiene, infection control, and compliance with hospital policies.

Oversee staffing, rostering, leave management, and performance appraisals.

Respond to emergencies and implement hospital protocols as required.

Monitor KPIs, implement service improvements, and ensure operational efficiency.

Liaise with clinical and administrative teams to coordinate services and minimize disruption.

Maintain records, reports, and compliance with Health & Safety, GDPR, and hospital policies.

Person Specification Proven experience in portering/orderly services with supervisory/managerial experience.

Excellent organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills.

Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.

Knowledge of hospital operations, infection control, and Health & Safety legislation.

Ability to work flexibly, adapt to changing demands, and lead a team effectively.

Competent IT skills (MS Office, rostering systems, SAP HR desirable).

Conditions of Employment: Annual Leave Entitlement: 30 days per annum pro- rata (according to criteria in Circular 111/99).

Annual leave is calculated January to December of each year Sick Leave Regulations: Please refer to contract of employment and attendance management policy.

Probationary Period: The appointee shall hold office for a probationary period of six months The terms of the Voluntary Hospitals Superannuation Scheme (VHSS & SPSPS) and the Voluntary Hospitals Spouses and Childrens Scheme will apply to this position A minimum of one month's notice of termination of employment is required.

Notice of termination of employment must be received in writing Uniform Policy must be adhered to at all times.

Hygiene During the course of employment, the post holder is responsible for ensuring full compliance with the Hospitals hygiene and infection prevention and control policies.

This includes promoting and monitoring best practice in hand hygiene and adherence to all Hospital hygiene processes.

Hygiene and infection control are core components of St.

Michaels Hospital quality and safety systems and are essential to protecting the health and wellbeing of patients, staff, and visitors and to preventing healthcare-associated infections.

Policies/Legislation: All hospital policies and procedures form an integral part of the contract of employment and may be updated or revised from time to time, as appropriate, in consultation with union representatives.

Employees are required to comply with all hospital policies, procedures (including Dignity at Work, Trust in Care and the Computer Usage Policy) and the Hospitals ethical codes of practice.

All hospital policies are available on the Hospital share drive under Hospital Policies Confidentiality In the course of employment, staff may have access to information relating to the medical or personal affairs of patients, students, staff and/or other hospital business.

All such information is strictly confidential and must not be disclosed or discussed except in the proper performance of duties or when authorised to do so.

Records must be handled securely at all times and must not be left in a manner that allows unauthorised access.

When no longer required, records must be stored or disposed of in accordance with hospital policy.

Please note the following: The Hospital Board is not responsible for the loss or theft of personal belongings.

All fire safety procedures must be strictly observed, and the post holder must ensure compliance within their area of responsibility, including attendance at mandatory fire safety training.

All accidents, incidents or near misses within the service must be reported immediately and managed in line with hospital policy.

Mandatory training requirements must be completed and maintained within required timeframes, including Manual Handling, Basic Life Support, Hand Hygiene, Waste Management and other relevant statutory or role-specific training.

In accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005), smoking is not permitted within the hospital buildings or hospital grounds.

The post holder is advised to avail of recommended occupational health programmes, including Hepatitis B vaccination, through Occupational Health services.
