PhD Scholarship in Stroke Prevention Research 2025

Overview
The broad area of focus for this research project relates to intervention development to meet the psychological needs of people and families affected by stroke. The scholarship supports a PhD researcher at University of Galway with a focus on psychological support in stroke prevention and recovery. The Croí award, known as the Joe & Helen O'Toole Research Scholarship, is being made available to support research related to stroke leading to a PhD at University of Galway. The research activity will align with Croí's mission to advance stroke prevention strategies and understand the challenges of stroke recovery.
* Intervention development to meet the psychological needs of people and families affected by stroke
* Areas of particular interest include:
* Young people affected by stroke
* Needs of family members affected by stroke
* Vocational issues and needs
* Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
* Digital approaches to the delivery of mental health support
The specific research focus will be developed by the successful applicant and the supervisory team in the School of Psychology, University of Galway. The supervisors will be Prof. Brian McGuire and Dr. Tom Burke.
Eligibility Criteria
* Applications are invited from postgraduate researchers with a background in health including psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work or health promotion.
* Essential:
o A Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field, or a Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience
o Experience of systematic review of healthcare interventions
* Desirable:
o Experience in stroke or chronic disease prevention or management
o Experience in intervention development
Scholarship Details
* Stipend: €30,000 p.a.
* Fees: €5,500 p.a.
* Expenses and equipment including laptop and Public & Patient Involvement budget: €3,000
* Conference attendance: €1,500
* The award is for up to a maximum of four years and is subject to continued registration and engagement as a PhD candidate at University of Galway.
