Operating within the Health, Safety, and Quality function, the Planning Engineer analyses planning applications, manages GIS data, and supports initiatives to prevent third-party damage to gas infrastructure.Key ResponsibilitiesAnalyse national planning applications using GIS to identify and assess potential risks to gas pipelines.Classify risk levels — from low-impact residential developments to high-risk works near infrastructure.Manage the provision and auditing of GIS data to third parties, councils, and developers.Respond to planning and development queries from local authorities, designers, and contractors.Track, log, and report on application volumes, risk trends, and key performance indicators.Escalate significant risks or incidents to senior engineers for review.Maintain efficient workflows and prevent backlogs in application management.Support the implementation of third-party damage prevention strategies and safety initiatives.Provide GIS technical expertise to internal teams as required.Systems & ToolsGIS Platform: Core tool for spatial analysis and infrastructure protection (shared by multiple utilities).Email & Data Systems: Manage external requests and maintain accurate digital records.Dial Before You Dig: Provide occasional support for excavation enquiry responses.Ideal Candidate ProfileExperience: 2-3 years in engineering, planning, or GIS-related roles.Education: Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, GIS, Planning, or related field (Level 8 or 9 preferred).Technical Skills:Strong GIS knowledge (essential).Understanding of ground risk, excavation, or civil infrastructure.Proficiency in interpreting maps, drawings, and spatial data.Personal Attributes:Analytical mindset with strong attention to detail.Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.Highly organized with the ability to manage high query volumes efficiently.Commitment to maintaining safety and data integrity standards.SummaryA desk-based, analytical position focused on protecting national gas infrastructure through proactive assessment, data management, and collaboration.
