Project Overview

Our client is undertaking a major fuel transition project at a key power generation facility, shifting from coal to heavy fuel oil (HFO). The scope includes the construction of two large HFO tanks, installation of auxiliary boilers, implementation of ash injection systems, and comprehensive upgrades to existing infrastructure and systems.

Role Summary

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical installation of two 22MW auxiliary boilers, including all associated tie-in works, a purpose-built boiler house, exhaust stack, and blowdown tank. The role will also oversee the mechanical works for four new ash injection systems, from receiving hoppers to injection points.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure all mechanical works are executed in line with statutory Health, Safety & Environmental regulations and internal technical standards.

Manage mechanical contractors and assigned work scopes as delegated by the Project or Site Manager.

Liaise with internal engineering and project teams to ensure smooth project execution.

Supervise on-site mechanical activities and coordinate with station maintenance teams.

Implement and monitor Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) for mechanical systems in collaboration with asset specialists.

Oversee mechanical quality assurance in line with the Project Quality Plan.

Maintain daily contact with contractors; review ITP documentation and ensure compliance.

Conduct regular site audits for safety, environmental, and quality compliance during construction and commissioning phases.

Monitor progress against project schedules; provide reporting and participate in progress meetings.

Support cost control efforts in conjunction with the Project Manager.

Manage special tooling and equipment in coordination with the principal contractor.

Draft technical specifications for mechanical scopes; support tendering and procurement processes.

Ensure proper use of plant modification procedures and update all mechanical documentation as required.

Manage contracts using the internal Contractor Management process, including documentation and formal meetings (Kick-Off, Progress, Close-Out).

Attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and workshop inspections as needed.

Compile a Mechanical Close-Out Report and support commissioning processes.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum of 7 years' post-qualification experience in mechanical engineering within the power generation sector.

Proven track record in mechanical plant installation (e.g., turbines, pumps, tanks, piping systems).

Strong knowledge of HSE standards and best practices.

Experience working on large-scale construction or retrofit projects.

Excellent supervision and contractor management skills.

Ability to work under tight deadlines in a complex project environment.

Strong attention to detail, innovation, and problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and reporting skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project document management systems.

Physically capable of performing site duties, including safe mobility on active construction sites.

Previous experience working with power utilities or similar industrial operations.

Chartered Engineer status.

Experience working with auxiliary boiler systems or ash handling systems.

Qualifications

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Demonstrated expertise in power plant mechanical systems.

Level 8 Engineering degree or equivalent.

Chartered membership of a recognized engineering institution.

Additional Requirements

Access to personal phone, laptop/PC, and internet connection to support remote and on-site responsibilities.

All relevant site safety training completed prior to mobilization (Safe Pass, Manual Handling).
