The Mid-Western Regional Oncology Centre is hiring a Principal Medical Physicist responsible for all aspects of Radiation Oncology physics including equipment calibration and commissioning, clinical support, maintenance of appropriate quality assurance for equipment and treatment delivery, compliance with radiation safety and licensing. The principal physicist will provide a leadership role and support management activities in delivering a high quality and flexible service at the Mid-Western Regional Oncology Centre. The principal physicist will also act as Medical Physics Expert for the centre and ensure adequate Medical Physics Expert cover within the department. Radiation Protection Advisor status is desirable. Principle Duties & Responsibilities Clinical Radiation Physics & Treatment Planning Provide advanced clinical medical physics input into the planning and delivery of radiotherapy treatments. Participate in and oversee complex external beam radiotherapy planning, including IMRT, VMAT, stereotactic techniques, IGRT, and adaptive radiotherapy approaches. Perform review and verification of treatment plans, ensuring accuracy, clinical appropriateness, and safe deliverability. Translate clinical intent from Radiation Oncologists into technically executable treatment parameters for Radiation Therapists. Contribute to the acquisition, processing, and evaluation of imaging datasets including 4DCT and respiratory motion management techniques. Support dose calculation integrity, treatment plan optimisation, and data management for radiotherapy delivery systems. Equipment Commissioning, Calibration & Technical Services Lead and/or support acceptance testing, commissioning, and validation of radiotherapy equipment, including linear accelerators and associated systems. Ensure calibration and characterisation of all radiation-producing equipment and sources in accordance with national and international standards. Maintain and develop reference data sets for safe clinical use of treatment delivery systems. Contribute to the specification, evaluation, procurement, and introduction of new radiotherapy technologies and systems. Ensure appropriate integration of new technologies into clinical workflows and treatment pathways. Quality Assurance, Safety & Regulatory Compliance Design, implement, and continuously develop comprehensive radiotherapy quality assurance programmes covering equipment, planning systems, and treatment delivery. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory frameworks including HIQA, EPA, JCI, radiation safety standards, and applicable national/international legislation. Investigate incidents, near misses, and unexpected clinical or technical outcomes, ensuring robust root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions. Maintain accurate, auditable documentation within a formal quality management system, including procedures, protocols, and technical work instructions. Participate in multidisciplinary audit, radiation safety governance, and clinical risk management structures. Medical Physics Expert (MPE) & Clinical Consultation Act as (or contribute to) the designated Medical Physics Expert (MPE) for the centre. Provide expert-level advice on radiation physics, dosimetry, radiobiology, and radiation protection to clinical and technical teams. Ensure appropriate MPE cover across clinical services and treatment modalities. Provide authoritative guidance on complex clinical, technical, and safety-related decision-making in radiotherapy. Support translation of emerging scientific evidence into safe and effective clinical practice. Research, Innovation & Service Development Lead or contribute to research and development initiatives within radiotherapy physics, including clinical innovation and translational research. Support evaluation, adoption, and implementation of emerging radiotherapy technologies and techniques. Present scientific and technical work at national and international conferences and professional forums. Contribute to the design and delivery of new clinical programmes, workflows, and service improvement initiatives from concept to implementation. Promote evidence-based practice and continuous improvement in radiotherapy service delivery. Professional Practice, Leadership, Team Capability & Governance Provide professional and scientific leadership within the radiotherapy physics service, setting clear expectations for quality, safety, and performance standards. Promote a culture of open communication, engagement, and continuous improvement across the team and wider service. Support structured performance development, including regular objective setting, review, and feedback processes aligned with professional standards. Mentor, coach, and develop team members, fostering technical excellence, clinical competence, and professional growth. Delegate effectively and support the coordination of complex technical workstreams, ensuring accountability and high standards of delivery. Ensure full compliance with internal policies (including Code of Conduct, Quality Management, Health & Safety) and all relevant external regulatory requirements. Promote and embed the organisations mission, vision, and values, with particular emphasis on patient safety, clinical governance, and professional integrity. Multidisciplinary Collaboration, Education & External Engagement Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary oncology team including Radiation Oncologists, Radiation Therapists, dosimetrists, and clinical engineers. Act as a key liaison with wider Medical Physics networks, including regional and national radiotherapy physics services. Contribute expert input into multidisciplinary clinical decision-making, protocols, and treatment pathway development. Provide and support education and training across clinical, scientific, and technical disciplines within radiotherapy. Engage with external regulatory, professional, and scientific bodies on matters relating to radiotherapy physics practice, standards, and service development. Professional qualifications, registration, essential skills & knowledge. Possess a recognised first or second class honours degree (NFQ Level 8) in which physical science was taken as a major subject and honours obtained in that subject. Possess a recognised postgraduate degree (NFQ Level 9 or above) in Medical Physics, or hold a recognised post-graduate qualification equivalent thereto. At least seven years relevant experience, at least three of which were at Senior grade. Initiative and excellent communication skills with a motivational people approach and proven leadership ability.
