Job Description
Job Title: Healthcare Assistant
Report to: Director of Nursing
Job Purpose: To enhance the quality of life of each resident by providing individualized holistic care, promoting independence, and communicating effectively with residents and the multidisciplinary team.
Working Hours: You will be guaranteed a minimum of 39 hours per week.
Main responsibilities
To deliver quality care to each resident.
To assist residents with intimate and personal care, based on assessed needs.
To assist residents with eating and drinking where and when appropriate.
To promote and encourage a normal nutritional diet.
To assist residents with mobilizing.
To assist with diversional therapy (i.e., activities, movement to music, etc.).
Assist nursing staff with all resident care and the care of the dying.
Be familiar with infection control.
Report any changes in residents’ condition to senior nurse on duty.
At night ensure residents sleep patterns are not unduly disrupted by excessive noise and bright lights.
Document any records required to be kept in the course of duty.
Health & Safety
Due to the high dependency of the residents, close supervision day and night is vital for their safety and well‑being.
Be aware of health and safety policies within Nazareth Care Ireland.
Report any faulty equipment (e.g., lifting hoists, bath hoists, etc.) to your immediate supervisor.
Familiarize yourself with the use of transfer slide sheets and handling belts.
Use hoists only with a second staff member present.
Ensure you understand policies and procedures regarding evacuation and fire.
Additional Daily Responsibilities
Collect food orders from residents by 8:00 am daily.
Support with tea and toast at breakfast time.
Serve meals to residents in the dining room from the Bain Marie.
Provide tray service to resident rooms as required.
Clear crockery and cutlery from resident rooms and dining areas to the pantry after each meal.
Deliver additional food items as requested.
Complete tea rounds during morning, afternoon, and evening periods.
Replenish water jugs in resident rooms daily.
Provide tea and light refreshments to resident families in exceptional circumstances.
Maintain pantry cleanliness overnight.
Prepare breakfast trays for the following day.
Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications
Have FETAC Level 5 and/or other relevant training.
Have previous experience of caring for the elderly, preferably in a residential setting.
Adopt a person‑centered approach to care planning.
Experience of working with others in a team setting.
Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development.
Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
Have a genuine interest in caring for older people.
Show a positive attitude and be open to changing needs within Nazareth Care Ireland.
Participate in care planning with nursing and other relevant staff.
Be proficient in manual handling and patient moving skills.
