Overview
The Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) I is a key member of the point of care team and leads the clinical management of the Theatre Scrub Nursing team ward with the CNM II. The Theatre complex consists of 5 theatres (3 general, a minor ops room and a recovery room). The CNM I upholds UPMC values in the clinical setting, ensuring accessible, world-class care that puts patients first. The post holder will work with the CNM II and other inter-professional team members to ensure efficient admission, transfer, and discharge processes and promote a nurse-led service. This is a full-time permanent position.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Professional/Clinical
* Assist the CNM II with patient care to ensure high professional standards using an evidence-based, care planning approach.
* Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership to point-of-care staff.
* Coordinate, assess, plan, deliver and review service user care by all staff in the designated area in collaboration with the CNM II.
* Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users in line with NMBI guidelines.
* Collaborate with service users, families, carers and other staff in treatment and care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care with direct involvement and supervision of other qualified nurses.
* Develop and promote good relationships with patients and carers.
* Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team to promote teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Evaluate and develop the department’s philosophy, objectives and goals.
* Ensure staff are familiar with the use and care of equipment, and that equipment is maintained in good working order.
* Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information.
* Liaise with pharmacy stock management for theatre requirements.
Quality
* Participate in and encourage the development of evidence-based practice.
* Assist in unit audits and data collection.
* Monitor incidents on the unit and follow up with the CNM II.
* Ensure patient satisfaction surveys are completed and adhere to KPIs.
* Coordinate with the CSSD team regarding instrumentation for theatre lists to ensure availability.
Managerial Responsibilities
* Supervise, coordinate and deploy nursing and support staff to ensure optimum delivery of care within the designated area.
* Assist the CNM II in bed management and patient flow.
* Serve as the senior clinical point of contact for communication with the multidisciplinary team.
* Maintain accreditation standards within the ward and coordinate staff in accreditation tasks.
* Assist with workforce planning including rostering.
* Manage resources efficiently and lead practice development in the clinical area.
* Lead and implement change using lean methodology.
* Contribute to policies and procedures at area and hospital levels.
* Support the CNM II and deputise in their absence when required.
* Maintain clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
* Facilitate nurses to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document patient care.
* Orientate students and new staff to the ward.
* Ensure consumables are available for theatre lists and pre-empt issues with stock in working order.

Qualifications & Experience
* Be registered, or eligible for registration in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by NMBI.
* A minimum of five years' experience as a staff nurse in a theatre setting.
* At least 1 year of management experience in a theatre setting is desirable.
* Post-registration course in perioperative care is desirable.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Awareness of HR policies and procedures.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft packages.
* Active involvement in continuous improvement using lean tools and methodology.
