Job Title:Sub-Editor (Features) - Maternity Cover ContractFunction:EditorialDepartment:ProductionReporting to:Chief Sub-Editor (Features)Role PurposeThe Sub-Editor (Features) is responsible for curating, editing and enhancing content forpublication across our digital and print channels.The role holder works in collaboration with the Section Editors to oversee the editing ofcontent for titles such as the Irish Independent website and its associated print titles, as wellas the Sunday World website and print title.The role holder ensures the delivery of finished content, ready for publication, across all titlesto the required quality standards and works closely with the audience team to ensure contentis digital ready at all times.This production function covers a five-day operation in our integrated newsroom on a rosteredbasis.Role Responsibilities (Overview)Writing compelling headlines that meet both SEO and UX demandsEditing articles for grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy, and enhancing content for digital publication as required, at all times upholding the style, standards and ethics of Mediahuis IrelandFact checking, ensuring content is free from legal issues, and liaising with the writer where appropriateEditing photos: pulling photos from image management applications, cropping photos for publication, verifying imagesWorking to exacting deadlinesGiving a final review to content under directionWorking to meet specific individual goals as assignedCarry out your duties at all times in accordance with the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes.Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)At least 2 years of professional journalism experience as an editor or sub-editor with digital experienceExperience of a newsroom environmentFamiliarity with Desk, P-Series, InDesign, InCopy and digital CMS platforms is desirableComprehensive knowledge of house styleA good knowledge of media law, especially defamation, privacy, copyright and data protectionSkillsBehaviouralWorking in a collaborative and multidisciplinary wayAbility to work under exacting deadlines with speed and excellent attention to detailDemonstrably strong communication skillsDecisiveness - making good decisions with a high degree of personal responsibilityEnthusiasmAdaptabilityTechnicalExpert news judgmentCopy-editing and digital and print production skills, demonstrating consistency at putting together coherent and cohesive headlines, sub-heads, standfirsts, and captionsAbility to use online toolsComprehensive knowledge of house styleGood knowledge of libel law and relevant legislation, including contempt, privacy, copyright etc.Familiarity with the Press Council of Ireland's Code of Practice
