Offer Description
Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Researcher with expertise in Old Norse-Viking Studies and/or Cultural Economics, to lead the Branding & Cultural Economy strand of the NorseMap Project based in the School of English and Digital Humanities at UCC.
NorseMap is a 5-year project funded by the European Research Council, using citizen science methodologies to gather data on the Viking legacy from across Europe and mapping the evolution of responses to the Viking past over time.
The ideal candidate will either have a PhD in Old Norse Viking Studies and have engaged in their research with reception, and particularly with branding, marketing and commercialisation activities, or they will have a PhD in Cultural Economics or an adjacent discipline and have engaged with the history of branding and marketing in one or more relevant sectors (tourism, museums and galleries, creative industries, the food and beverage industry, sports, etc.) In leading the Branding & Cultural Economy strand of the project, the candidate will be expected to proactively gather data on the commercialisation of the Vikings in the present day, including through group- sourcing projects, interviews with relevant stakeholders, and various public engagement and community collection initiatives.
In the second and third year of the projects, this data will be combined with more traditional archival research dedicated to uncovering the history of the Viking brand with the goal of writing a monograph that tells the story of the evolution of commercial exploitations of the Viking past to the present day.
An ability to range widely across domains, including possessing a working knowledge of one or more European languages in addition to English, is particularly welcome, as is a proactive approach to promoting the project and engaging with non-academic stakeholders.
Prior experience using social media and network theories in research, involvement in marketing campaigns, ability to apply economic theory to art and culture, and/or experience of taking creative approaches to research dissemination would all bring beneficial skills to the project team.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of international researchers in mapping the legacy of a cultural phenomenon and to play a leading role in the successful implementation of an ERC-funded project.
To conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
To gain experience in grant writing.
To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.
To become familiar with the publication process.
To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, School or College.
To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day-to-day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.
Specific Requirements
A PhD qualification in a relevant area (either Old Norse Viking Studies, Cultural Economics, or an adjacent discipline).
Appropriate research experience, including a record of independent publication and a clear understanding of the role of advertising, marketing and branding in the commercial, tourism, or GLAM sectors.

Proficiency with both quantitative and qualitative analysis of medium to large datasets.
A demonstrated capability of working within a project team to achieve results.

Ability to work well within a team.
Working proficiency in one or more European languages in addition to English.
Prior published work on reception, branding, and/or the commercialisation of the Viking past.
Familiarity with one or more relevant theoretical approach (e.g. Social Network Theory, Actor Network Theory, techniques for non-market valuation of cultural goods, etc.)
Experience with high-impact dissemination activities, such as print or online news articles, podcasts, social media campaigns, or other promotional activities.
Prior experience conducting online or in-person surveys.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the community collection and public engagement remit of the project, and prior experience in this area is desirable.
