This role involves reviewing, updating, and developing the digital protection guide “Security in‑a‑Box,” which has supported human rights defenders in managing digital risks for over 20 years. The successful candidate will work remotely on a 12‑month contract, with potential for extension.
Job Overview
The Digital Protection Editor will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the “Security in‑a‑Box” guide. This includes updating existing content, researching new digital protection strategies, and coordinating the translation and dissemination of the materials.
Responsibilities
Updating existing guides: Review and revise the current “Security in‑a‑Box” digital protection guides to ensure they are current and relevant.
Research and development: Create new digital protection guides that respond to emerging threats and the needs of human rights defenders globally.
Translation coordination: Manage the translation process of guides using Weblate, ensuring accessibility across different languages.
Content management: Oversee content production on Git platforms (such as GitHub, GitLab, or Codeberg) and coordinate digital publication and dissemination efforts.
Trend analysis: Support research activities on digital protection trends, emerging risks, and best practices faced by human rights defenders worldwide.
Remuneration and Contract Details
Salary: Up to €27,000 annually, based on an estimated 60 hours per month (about 15 hours per week), at €37 per hour.
Payment: Paid monthly upon receipt of reports and invoices for services provided.
Contract Duration: 12 months, with potential for extension based on performance and organizational needs.
This is a consulting/contractor role, not a permanent employment position.
Requirements
Strong, practical knowledge of digital information security, ICT tools, and strategies relevant to various risk situations.
Up-to-date understanding of digital security tools, operating systems, and risk management practices.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and well-structured content.
Experience in technical research related to digital security or ICT.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multicultural team environment.
Flexibility and adaptability in a remote working setting.
Preferred
Practical experience managing environments like Git (CodeBerg, GitLab, GitHub) and Weblate.
Experience as a digital protection trainer or support person.
Knowledge of other security fields, such as physical security or psychosocial well‑being.
Prior work supporting human rights defenders or organizations.
Interest and knowledge of international issues and human rights situations.
Additional language skills, especially French, Spanish, Russian, or Arabic, are advantageous.
