We are currently hiring a Staff Nurse – Radiology for our hospital in Galway, Ireland.
This role is a permanent, full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week over 5 days, Monday to Friday Responsibilities Assess patients before radiological procedures, review clinical history, ensure informed consent is obtained, complete safety checks, and prepare patients appropriately including NBM status, IV access, and required pre-medications.
Explain procedures clearly to patients and families, provide reassurance, verify identity and allergies, and complete all required checklists and documentation.
Assist radiologists and radiographers during diagnostic and interventional procedures, maintain sterile technique, position patients safely, and operate monitoring equipment effectively.
Administer IV contrast, sedation, analgesia, and emergency medications safely in line with hospital policy while monitoring for adverse reactions throughout the procedure.
Monitor and document vital signs before, during, and after procedures, responding promptly to changes using Early Warning Score guidelines.
Provide post-procedure care, manage complications, document recovery observations, deliver discharge instructions, and ensure safe transfer or discharge of patients.
Recognize and manage medical emergencies including anaphylaxis and cardiac or respiratory events, initiate BLS or ALS when required, and maintain competency with emergency equipment.
Adhere to infection prevention and control policies, maintain strict aseptic practices, use PPE appropriately, and comply with all radiation protection and health and safety standards.
Maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing documentation, manage clinical supplies and equipment, ensure readiness of emergency equipment, and report any faults promptly.
Engage in ongoing professional development, maintain NMBI registration, participate in audits and quality initiatives, mentor junior staff, and collaborate effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
Requirements Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland in the General Division and a recognised Degree or Diploma in General Nursing or equivalent qualification.
Minimum two years of post-registration nursing experience in an acute hospital environment, ideally within perioperative, day surgery, endoscopy, ICU, A E, or other procedural areas.
Experience and competency in IV cannulation, venepuncture, administering IV medications, and monitoring patients receiving sedation.
Strong clinical assessment and observation skills with the ability to recognise and respond promptly to patient deterioration and manage emergency situations effectively.
Post-registration training or qualifications in perioperative nursing, critical care, emergency nursing, or conscious sedation.
Previous experience working within radiology, imaging, or interventional procedure environments, including care of patients receiving conscious sedation.
Experience working in a private hospital setting and familiarity with JCI or HIQA accreditation standards.
Good understanding of radiation safety principles and knowledge of contrast media use, including recognition and management of contrast reactions.
Familiarity with interventional radiology procedures and experience participating in clinical audit and quality improvement activities.
Experience in mentoring, preceptorship, or supporting new staff and students in clinical practice.
