Staff Nurse – Permanent Contract
Operating Theatre/Perioperative Complex – Beaumont Hospital including St Joseph's Hospital, Raheny
Reports to: Clinical Nurse Manager 1/2/3
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
Closing Date: 12 noon 29/12/2025 – early closure if substantial applications received
Responsibilities
We are looking for Operating Theatre Nurses to provide high quality patient-centred care in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative settings.
The post holder works as part of a multi-disciplinary team, establishing and maintaining good working relationships and developing additional clinical skills pertinent to the specialty.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Accountable for own actions and scope of practice for Nursing and Midwifery, and for adherence to Beaumont Hospital policies, guidelines, and competencies.
Maintain knowledge of and adherence to all Beaumont Hospital Standard Operating Procedures and policies.
Develop specialist knowledge and skills of nursing practice relating to designated working environment (scrub/circulating or anaesthetic/recovery nursing).
Ensure the highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety, utilising evidence-based practice.
Prepare clinical areas for receiving perioperative patients and complete all safety checks.
Communicate with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to plan and coordinate patient care.
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised, high quality patient care pre-, intra-, and post-operatively.

Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
Recommend changes that enhance patient safety and ensure delivery of high standard and quality patient care.
Work within scope of practice at all times, as outlined by the NMBI.
Assess patient's condition on an ongoing basis and keep the nurse in charge of the theatre/unit aware of any relevant changes.
Actively participate in patient care and perform procedures accurately, completely, and safely in line with hospital policies and standard operating procedures in the specialist area of perioperative nursing.
Maintain accurate, timely, and legible clinical and legal documentation, in accordance with national and local policies.
Ensure patient/professional confidentiality and data protection in line with GDPR.
Respect the dignity and confidentiality of patients, serving as an advocate as necessary.
Maintain appropriate knowledge of risk management and incident reporting in line with hospital and national policy.
Contribute to nursing quality assurance by being aware of and assisting in clinical audits and data collection.
Develop clinical expertise, leadership, and teaching skills through nursing practice.
Provide supervision of junior nursing staff and direction and support as necessary.
Adapt effectively and efficiently in an ever-changing work environment.

Respect cultural and religious practices of patients and staff.
Be punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed shifts.
Comply with all online and practical mandatory training as per hospital policy.

Organise care for caseload of patients in line with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Display initiative and manage time efficiently and effectively.
Assist with the development and maintenance of standards of care and quality assurance programmes/initiatives.
Adhere to hospital policies and maintain effective links with support services and other departments.

Complete required orientation as directed by the department.
Promote a learning environment and encourage professional development.
Follow current developments in nursing which will increase professional knowledge and skills.
Undertake relevant continued professional development in line with the NMBI 'Competency Framework' to develop own professional practice.
Commit to undertake specific courses to enhance knowledge and skill set, including following the local education pathway and attending other relevant courses/study days.
Be able to teach and act as a preceptor (after appropriate training) to other nursing staff and students in the department.
Qualifications – Selection Criteria
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.
Mandatory
– Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses and maintained on the Live Register with NMBI.
Desirable
– Operating Department experience in an acute Hospital setting within the last 3 years; a relevant Post Graduate Qualification in Operating Department Nursing.
