Clinical Nurse Specialist

Role Overview
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will interface between patients and the specialist medical team, delivering individualized, evidence-based care and emotional support while enhancing standards of service delivery through clinical practice, management, education, research and audit.
Key Responsibilities
Provide specialist urology nursing support, advice and emotional assistance to patients and families.
Promote and maintain a seamless, multidisciplinary service within a professional framework.
Influence patient care through the development of specialist skills, knowledge and experience.
Collaborate with the Consultant Specialist and multidisciplinary team members across the hospital.
Champion patient-focused care and uphold patient privacy and dignity at all times.
Ensure evidence-based nursing care in line with the NMBI scope of practice.
Report operationally to the Assistant Director of Nursing and be professionally accountable to the Director of Nursing.
Identify and support development needs for the urology service.
Maintain confidentiality, ethical standards and legal compliance in all activities.
Handle complaints in accordance with hospital procedures.
Contribute to the design, development and implementation of educational programmes for patients, families and staff.
Supervise and assess student nurses or midwives within the service.
Maintain a record of clinically relevant data aligned to national KPIs and participate in research and audit projects.
Present service data, patient outcomes and satisfaction metrics to senior leadership.
Engage in national and international meetings and workshops to further professional practice.
Qualifications
Registered in the General Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or entitled to be registered.
Minimum of one year (full-time) of experience in the specialist area of care.
Level 9 or higher third-level qualification relevant to the specialist area (equivalent to 60 ECTS or above) as required by the National Council for Nursing and Midwifery.
Alternatively, support will be provided to undertake required postgraduate education if Level 9 is not met.
Clinical, managerial and administrative capability to discharge the role's functions.

Contribute to changes in clinical practice that improve standards of care.
Deliver specialist nursing support for urology patients throughout the continuum of care.
Demonstrate focused knowledge and skill in urology nursing practice.
Provide comprehensive patient assessment covering physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects.
Plan service development needs with senior nursing leadership and medical teams.
Lead and oversee the service.
Ensure confidentiality and secure record keeping.
Adhere to hospital procedures and assist in operational guideline development.
Handle patient, public and staff complaints per hospital procedures.
Maintain professional standards in confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
Facilitate and participate in education and training for staff and students.
Understand equipment usage within the unit.
Communicate with patients, relatives and telephone inquiries; employ counselling skills.
Advocate for patient participation and informed decision-making.
Foster high-quality nurse/patient relationships through holistic care.
Remain aware of ethical and social considerations for individual patients.
Promote the primacy of the patient across all hospital activities.
Coordinate communication with relevant teams regarding patient status.
Educational Role
Serve as a resource and support to nursing staff caring for patients.
Educate patients to self-manage their condition and seek appropriate advice.
Engage in formal and informal professional development opportunities.
Participate in national and organisational committees where feasible.
Supervise and assess student nurses/midwives and cultivate a clinical learning environment.
Develop and review clinic protocols and patient information leaflets.
Provide supportive interventions to increase patients’ knowledge, skills and confidence.
Lead the design, development and delivery of education programmes for patients, families and carers.
Offer mentorship and preceptorship to nursing colleagues.
Conduct training programmes for nursing, MDT colleagues and stakeholders.
Identify and address personal professional development needs.
Audit & Research Role
Maintain a register of patients under urology care within the CNS caseload.
Record clinical data aligned to national KPIs, as directed by the Director of Nursing.
Participate in collaborative research projects improving patient outcomes.
Engage in audit activities to monitor quality of care and implement changes.
Audit own caseload and contribute to annual performance feedback.
Provide patient satisfaction, quality of life and patient flow data.
Deliver data on service attendance, outcomes and clinic metrics.
Attend national and international meetings and workshops.
Contribute to nursing research initiatives.
Consultative Role
Provide leadership in clinical practice and serve as a role model for best practice.
Develop and contribute to clinical standards and guidelines, supporting implementation.
Use specialist knowledge to enhance generalist nursing practice.
Establish collaborative relationships with other Clinical Nurse Specialists, Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and MDT colleagues.
Participate in integrated care planning meetings as required.
Build relationships with specialist services supporting community patients.
Liaise with other health service providers on the National Clinical Programme model.
Network with other Clinical Nurse Specialists in the area and professional associations.
