The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in positive behaviour support has a pivotal role in the delivery of effective, high quality, team based, and clinical nursing support to individuals with an intellectual disability, who have behaviour support and complex needs.
The purpose of the role is to provide direct specialist nursing support in the designated area in partnership with families, multi-disciplinary teams and key support staff by providing specialist behavioural assessment, formulation and intervention to individuals with complex needs who require positive behaviour support.
This will include holistic assessments of complex individual needs; providing training on person centred positive behaviour support approaches for staff and other professionals; providing specialist advice to staff, carers and families on the needs of individuals users with intellectual disabilities and who require support with complex behaviours.
To develop and deliver training to individuals and staff.
The CNS in positive behaviour support will deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the framework for the establishment of clinical nurse specialist posts, 4thEdition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) ****.
The clinical nurse specialist in positive behaviour support will base their practice on the five core concepts of clinical nurse specialist role defined as:
