The Organisation
The Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, RCSI, was founded in 1974 and provides registered nurses, registered midwives, and other health and social care professionals, with education, training, continuous professional development and research opportunities at the highest standard to support the maintenance of their professional development and competence.

Board: Faculty Board and staff - Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
The Role
The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, RCSI, is seeking an individual to join its board with a background and experience in Finance to promote the Faculty’s long-term success and sustainability while delivering on its strategic priorities.
Key Responsibilities Will Include
* Work closely with the Honorary Treasurer, Finance Sub-Committee and RCSI Finance to evaluate the financial performance and ensure financial transparency;
* Shadow the current Honorary Treasurer, gaining comprehensive understanding of the Faculty’s financial strategy;
* Review and advise on budgets, financial management and investment strategies to support the Faculty;
* Support internal controls, financial risk management and compliance with legal and relevant regulatory standards and RCSI policies, procedures and protocols;
* Take an active and proactive role in financial planning, budget review and funding strategies;
* Contribute to the development and implementation of the strategic direction of the Faculty;
* Collaboratively work with board members to oversee the implementation of the Faculty’s strategy;
* Contribute Finance expertise to the Faculty and the board as required.
* Membership of the Financial Sub-Committee.
Skills And Experience Required
* Financial Expertise: The ideal candidate will have a senior professional background in finance, with experience working with boards, either in an executive or non-executive capacity.
* Board Experience: Membership of a board and/or board sub-committee would be an advantage.
* Governance Knowledge: The candidate should possess a robust understanding of the highest levels of corporate governance and the dynamics of effective board functioning.
* Time Availability: The candidate must be able to dedicate sufficient time for board meetings and sub-committee meetings (particularly the Financial Sub-Committee).
* Compliance: A strong understanding of, and commitment to, ensuring the organisation adheres to governance standards and internal controls.
* A deep understanding and commitment to the Faculty’s mission and guiding principles.
The Board’s Duties Are To
* Provide strategic vision and direction for the Faculty;
* Demonstrate ethical leadership;
* Promote behaviours consistent with the culture and values of the Faculty;
* Make well-informed, high-quality decisions based on clear information from the Faculty Executive and RCSI;
* Monitor the activity and effectiveness of the Faculty Executive;
* Ensure prudent and effective controls, which enable risk to be assessed and managed, including financial management of the Faculty’s assets;
* Ensure compliance within the Faculty of RCSI policies and the principles of effective governance;
* Work to ensure the success and long-term sustainability of the Faculty;
* Act with reasonable care and skill.
Board Meetings
There are five board meetings a year plus an AGM and extraordinary meetings that may be necessitated from time to time. Board meetings take place in a hybrid manner. However, in person attendance at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, will be required from time to time. Board meetings typically run from 10am to 1pm.
Sub-Committee Meetings
The appointed candidate will be required join the Financial Sub-Committee which will meet five times per year, and potentially other Sub-Committee(s) as necessary. Sub-Committee meetings mainly take place virtually, occasionally in a hybrid manner and typically last 1 to 1.5 hours.
In addition, board members are encouraged to participate by attending occasional events, board education/training/seminars arranged by or hosted by the Faculty.
Remuneration
Board members do not receive remuneration for board membership. Travel and subsistence expenses will be paid in line with RCSI policies and public rates.
