PURPOSE:
Safety Advocates are positioned throughout the District schools to assist in maintaining an orderly and safe school environment that promotes an improved school climate and effective learning opportunities. They are expected to respond to emergencies, deter suspicious activity, and act as a visible presence to maintain order and safety within the school environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working under the direct supervision of the building Administrator, duties may vary by building but generally include:
* Patrolling school premises, parking lots, and surrounding areas to identify potential security issues.
* Monitoring access points, checking visitor identification, and ensuring only authorized personnel are allowed entry.
* Upholding school policies and regulations, including dress code, student behavior, and visitor protocols.
* Responding promptly to emergencies such as fires, medical incidents, active shooter situations, or security breaches.
* Investigating suspicious activity and reporting potential threats to school safety.
* Monitoring security camera systems and alarms to detect issues.
* Reporting incidents, concerns, and safety issues to school administrators and law enforcement when necessary.
* Maintaining a visible presence to deter criminal activity and provide security.
* Interacting with students positively and professionally, offering guidance and support when needed.
IMPORTANT SKILLS FOR A SAFETY ADVOCATE:
* Observation skills to attentively monitor surroundings and identify threats.
* Conflict resolution skills to de-escalate situations calmly.
* Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for reporting incidents and interacting with staff, students, and visitors.
* Decision-making abilities for assessing situations and acting appropriately in emergencies.
* Physical fitness to patrol large areas and respond swiftly to incidents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Experience with law enforcement, security, or similar fields preferred.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
PAY GRADE / LEVEL:
As per Union contract - $20.86 per hour
Monday - Friday; 10-month position
Hours are Monday through Friday.
Physical Demands:
This is a physically demanding position. The incumbent must spend the entire shift standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
