The Opportunity
A leading main contractor specialising in large-scale data centre and pharmaceutical developments is seeking an experienced Design Manager (Civil & Structural) to join its project team in Kildare.
This is a key leadership role responsible for managing the full design lifecycle across complex, high-specification builds. The successful candidate will bring strong civil and structural expertise, combined with proven experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams on technically demanding projects.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the civil & structural design process from pre-construction through to handover
Coordinate consultants, subcontractors, and specialist designers to ensure timely and compliant design delivery
Act as the primary interface between the design team and construction operations
Review and manage design documentation, drawings, specifications, and technical submissions
Drive design compliance with Irish Building Regulations, Eurocodes, and project-specific standards
Identify and mitigate design risks, ensuring buildability and cost-efficiency
Oversee value engineering and technical optimiser exercises
Ensure integration of structural systems with MEP and architectural requirements
Support BIM coordination and digital design management processes
Contribute to programme planning, tracking key design deliverables against project milestones
Assist in client presentations, technical meetings, and reporting
Candidate Profile
Degree-qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering
8+ years’ experience in civil/structural design and project delivery
Strong experience on large-scale projects, ideally:
Hyperscale or co-location data centres
Pharmaceutical or life sciences facilities
Background working with a main contractor or major design consultancy
Excellent understanding of reinforced concrete, steel structures, foundations, and groundworks
Strong knowledge of Eurocodes and Irish construction regulations
Proven ability to manage multiple design packages simultaneously
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams within fast-track environments
Strong commercial awareness and understanding of construction sequencing
Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards chartership
Experience in GMP-regulated pharmaceutical environments
Familiarity with BIM platforms (Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360)
Experience with temporary works design coordination
