Staff Nurse in Medical Oncology
About the Role
We are recruiting a Staff Nurse within Medical Oncology for an 11-month fixed term contract at UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
* Clinical Care: Ensure delivery of highest possible standard of care to all patients.
* Act as preceptor to preregistration students, mentor new clinical staff and provide guidance to colleagues.
* Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments to develop and maintain UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised learning environment.
* Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with multi-disciplinary team members.
* Support the unit manager by meeting agreed responsibilities.
* Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with consultants/nursing team, multidisciplinary team, patients and carers.
* Accept responsibility and be accountable for holistic care of named group of patients on a shift basis.
* Ensure highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety are maintained at all times.
* Demonstrate patient-centred style of clinical practice and provide emotional support to patients.
* Have understanding of principles and workings of pre-assessment.
* Maintain high standards of communication and working knowledge of NMBI publications.
* Maintain own professional registration and submit to HR department for verification yearly.
* Develop and maintain high level of knowledge of hospital policies and guidelines.
* Report clinic risk and health and safety concerns.
Quality & Audit
* Participate and lead in clinical audit and research activity, promoting positive attitude towards evidence-based practice.
* Undertake research/clinical audit, critically analyse and provide written reports.
* Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
* Work closely with Quality and Patient Safety team to ensure department is meeting accreditation standards.
Health & Safety
* To uphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital's policy requirements in relation to Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety and Health and Safety at work regulations.
* Identify potential risks for staff, patients and visitors and adhere to relevant incident reporting procedures.
* To observe general duty of care for health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients.
Professional / Education
* Develop skills to enable you to act as shift coordinator/Team Leader.
* Manage workload to ensure patient care needs are met and colleagues can take allocated break.
* Be responsible for care, control, storage and administration of drugs according to clinic and statutory guidelines.
* Develop IT skills to work efficiently within clinical environment.
* Have working knowledge of Isoft and other IT systems on patient pathway.
* Liaise directly with consultants regarding specific patient care and bed allocation.
* Continually risk assess theatre environment to ensure safety of patients, relatives and staff members.
* Practice and demonstrate research-based nursing care, maintaining personal and professional development.
* Undertake any specific training required to perform role.
* To observe complete confidentiality of all information and adherence to legal requirements of GDPR legislation.
Qualifications & Experience
* The Post holder must hold the following to fulfil requirements of this post:
* Be Registered General Nurse with The Nursing and Midwifery Bord of Ireland (NMBI).
* At least 1 year's post registration oncology experience – essential.
* Evidence of ongoing CPD.
