About the Research, Policy & Information (RPI) department
The Irish College of GPs views data and its analysis as essential for our health system to modernise and meet the needs of our patients and growing population.
RPI activities can help these goals to be realised, and the College's "Shaping the Future" discussion paper on the Workforce and Workload crisis in General Practice in Ireland (launched Oct ****), holds that the Research, Policy & Information department is important to mainstreaming research in general practice and thus should be "continued and potentially expanded to maximise this benefit".
Job Purpose
The Data Analyst will primarily support the Research, GP Training and IMG Rural departments as well as other departments across the College by providing high-quality data analysis, reporting, and insight.
The role will contribute to GP Trainings selection process, workforce planning, research, continuous improvement of education and training programmes, and evidence-based decision-making across the College.
The Data Analyst will work as part of a small team contributing to general practice workforce planning and training programme delivery in Ireland.
The role will involve close collaboration with colleagues across education, policy, and research functions, with particular focus on supporting GP Training's selection and assessment processes.
While the day-to-day work centres on data processing, analysis, and reporting, this work directly supports the College's mission to strengthen general practice and inform evidence-based workforce planning.
The postholder will use appropriate statistical and technological tools while ensuring full compliance with GDPR and relevant regulatory requirements, gaining broad exposure to healthcare research, medical education, and workforce data.
Key Result Areas
Oversee data processing aspect of GP Training selection processes, designing and improving these processes to support the administration of assessments and offers.
Develop analytical tools and provide mapping and modelling outputs for RPI, GP Training, IMG Rural and other approved projects.
Combine and manage complex data sources to generate metrics and support data analysis to provide analysis across the College to meet its advocacy and information needs.
Interpret complex information, presenting it clearly and concisely to non-analytical audiences.
Analyse and interpret data and provide guidance as required to support key decision making.
Offer expert knowledge and support appropriate projects that contribute to the overall College strategic goals.
Provide support for data issues across the College as prioritized and allocated by the Head of RPI (Research, Policy and Information).
Produce reports for stakeholders and document statistical approaches used in analyses.
Present data through accessible charts and dashboards to highlight trends, patterns, and insights that supports tjhe RPI, GP Training and IMG Rural departments objectives.
Enhance data quality, consistency, and governance by aligning with other data quality and privacy initiatives across the College, including workforce planning, education, and research.
Proactively participate in the Performance Management (Job Chats) process which seek to nurture high performing, cohesive teams.
Person Specification
Essential
Third level qualification in a relevant subject such as data analytics, informatics, statistics, mathematics, social sciences, economics, or computer science.
Minimum of 2 years experience in data analytics or in related field (areas such as statistical modelling, spatial analysis, survey analysis, policy research with quantitative components, dashboard design).
Experience with data analysis tools.
Strong preference for demonstrated experience with R, MS SQL, and Power BI specifically, as these form our core analytical infrastructure.
Ability to analyse data and communicate findings clearly and accurately, including highlighting gaps.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to high quality analysis and report writing.
Good organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
Ability to work with key stakeholders at all levels within collaborating organisations.
Understanding of the confidentiality requirements when handling personal or sensitive organisational data.
Desirable
Interest in assessment, medical education, healthcare and research.
Experience supporting research projects or evaluations.
Familiarity with healthcare, education, or workforce datasets.
Good understanding of research methods and/or statistics.
Familiarity with assessment data handling, and use of statistics in exam design and delivery.
Good awareness of data protection, research ethics, and information governance principles.
Experience creating dashboards or visualisations.
