Lead Data Engineer (Cloud Platform Lead)
Location: Remote (Ireland-based applicants)
Our client is seeking a Lead Data Engineer (Cloud Platform Lead) to take technical ownership of a major transition from on-premise SQL Server/SSIS to a fully modern, cloud-based data environment.
This is a hands‑on technical leadership role focused on designing, building, and optimising scalable data solutions that power analytics, automation, and AI initiatives.
You will play a central role in:
* Selecting cloud technologies
* Defining best practices for ingestion, transformation, and modelling
* Establishing the long‑term data architecture
* Ensuring performance, reliability, and future readiness
The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Technology and the Lead Software Engineer to develop a high‑performing and scalable cloud data platform.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design and build of a new cloud data platform, selecting appropriate technologies
* Manage the migration of existing SSIS and Python‑based processes into a unified cloud environment
* Develop data quality, validation, and lineage frameworks to ensure reliability and transparency
* Design scalable ingestion pipelines for ePOS, accounting, and third‑party systems
* Implement monitoring, validation, and alerting to safeguard data accuracy
* Optimise Power BI datasets and reporting performance
* Collaborate with software engineering teams on system integrations
* Define standards for:
o Cost optimisation
o Operational excellence
o Contribute to long‑term data strategy, supporting AI and predictive analytics initiatives
Experience & Skills Required
* 5+ years’ experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or analytics platform development
* Hands‑on experience designing or migrating to cloud‑based data solutions (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
* Proficiency in modern data pipeline/orchestration tools and transformation workflows
* Familiarity with Power BI modelling, dataflows, and performance tuning
* Strong understanding of data governance, lineage, and reliability practices
* Practical, delivery‑focused approach to problem‑solving
* Excellent communication and cross‑functional collaboration skills
Nice to Have
* Experience with Azure Data Factory, dbt, Airflow, or similar tools
* Knowledge of AI/ML integration, data observability, or metadata management
* Background in retail, financial, or SaaS‑based data environments
* Experience incorporating CI/CD and infrastructure automation into data platform workflows
