Supervisory Responsibility· Provide effective leadership in the supervision of the professional work of care workers and others in the work area. Foster a high level of morale among all staff by effective motivation and communication.· Apply the principles of effective delegation in all instances to the maximum level compatible with safety.· Assist in maintaining good order and organization in the home so the patients and staff can enjoy a clean, safe, comfortable and quiet environment.· Supervise the work of Healthcare Assistants and others in the work area to ensure that they are conversant with policies and procedures.· Ensure the health and safety policy of the service is strictly adhered to.· Ensure that fire drill and fire precautions are adhered to in the absence of managers.· Be familiar with all clinical procedures. Ensure correct procedures as per Amberley Home & Retirement Cottages policy and An Bord Altranais are adhered to in relation to the storage, administration and safe keeping of drugs.· Take charge of the unit when necessary and act up if required.· Take responsibility for maintaining stores and equipment. Plan for the conservation and economical use of supplies.· Ensure that policies and procedures and statutory regulations relating to the custody and administration of mediations are adhered to.· Take part in special projects and developments within the home, if required to do so.· Participate in orientation programmes for new staff.Care of Residents· Ensure that all care delivered is of the highest standard of nursing care using an evidence based, care planning approach to those living in Amberley Home & Retirement Cottages.· Work in conjunction with Healthcare Assistants to ensure the creation of a homelike environment with emphasis on the holistic care of the patient.· Treat all residents with dignity and respect, involving them in the planning and delivery of their care, where possible.· Maintain a high standard in relation to confidentiality in all areas of work at all time.· Ensure the distribution of meals, diets and feeding programmes for patients.· Ensure safe keeping of personal possessions of patients.· Interpret the significance of clinical observations and records and make a decision as to the action required.· Assist medical staff and ascertain medical treatments, where required.· Provide support for relatives and others involved with our residents.· Accompany residents to outside professional appointments as may be required from time to time.Maintain Records/Provide Updates· Ensure that all medical records are kept up-to-date and readily available to all nursing and medical personnel.· Keep the Nurse Managers informed on a regular basis of the condition of the residents and any employment issues which may arise. Contact the Nurse Manager immediately in the event of any serious change in the condition or death of a resident.· Make written and verbal reports as required and participating actively in unit handovers to nursing staff day and night.· Report any complaints of mishandling or abuse of residents to the Director of Care immediately and assist in the investigation, if requested.Comply with Policies/Procedures· Maintain familiarity and comply with all Nursing Home policies and procedures.· Comply with all safety regulations in accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and maintain a hazard-free environment.· Be fully familiar with emergency procedures and ensure that a safe environment is created for the residents.· Carry out procedures and therapies carefully. Observe and report in accordance with essential standards.· Report all incidents and accidents involving self, residents or visitors to the Director of Care (or the Staff Nurse in charge).· Report promptly to medical staff where action required falls outside the remit of nursing responsibilities.· Complete Accident Forms, when necessary.· Contribute to the formation and implementation of Amberley Home & Retirement Cottages policies and procedures. Initiate and develop new ideas and methods within the Nursing Home and encourage staff participation.Code of Conduct· Adhere to An Bord Altranais Code of Professional Conduct.· Maintain a high standard of work performance, good attendance, appearance and punctuality at all times.· Keep clinically and professionally competent. Ensure that registration is up to date as outlined by An Bord.Altranais and submit to the Director of Nursing at the beginning of each year.· Ensure good working relationships with colleagues and other employees, patients and visitors.· Keep up to date in the area of care of older person and attend national and local study days or other educationalactivities, taking the responsibility for one's own professional education.On-going Training/Meetings· Participate in the Performance Review system and in-service training, including manual handling and fire safety updates.· Remain informed of clinical developments and nursing trends and encourage others to do the same.· Take personal responsibility for your own professional development and updating.· Attend meetings, as and when directed.· Be flexible in working both day and night duty on a rotational basis.· Perform such other duties as appropriate to the post, as may be assigned to you from time to time by the Nurse in Charge/Director of Nursing or such other designated person.Clinical Functions / Resident Care Duties and ResponsibilitiesTo work together with all disciplines involved with the total care of residents and their Families, integrating nursing care with their physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs in order to provide the highest possible standard of nursing care.To assess the individual needs and aims of the resident.To plan, supervise and participate in the nursing care of the residents requiring care in Amberley.To evaluate and up-date nursing care plans as set out by the Director of Nursing.To maintain records as appropriate.To implement the policies of Amberley Home & Retirement Cottages.To manage and maintain a safe working environment at all times for all staff.To manage resources within the clinical area including equipment and supplies in an orderly and economic way.To ensure safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with established procedures and laws.· To manage incidents and be aware of procedures in regard to accidents, fire or violence.· To communicate information on resident care and related matters and report to the Director of Nursing.To guide, teach and encourage Care Assistants in their duties in a kind, caring and professional manner.The Staff Nurse role in providing recreation and diversional activities for residents is:Encouraging and being involved in diversional activities planned for residents inthe Home, on the ward, in the Occupational/Divisional Therapy Room or, on occasions, off site.Supporting and assisting residents to maintain their hobbies and interests.Encouraging and facilitating reading.The Supportive Role of the Nurse is:Listening and talking with residents, relatives, friends and volunteers and reporting any relevant information to appropriate staff.Assisting residents with access to appropriate religious or spiritual support as required, in keeping with the Homes' policy.Maintaining a respectful, non-judgemental and caring attitude towards all residents, their family and friends.Assisting with Last Offices and dealing with the deceased in accordance with the Homes' policy.General Duties:Attending Fire Training once a year or as required by the Home.Helping to maintain a safe environment for residents, visitors and colleagues.Answering residents care call bells.Following guidelines/policies for safe practice.Attending relevant study days, in-service education and training skill days.Continually reviewing his or her own progress with the Director of Nursing.Answering the telephone in the exact format that is prescribed by the Director of Nursing and also directing all resident related enquiries to the Director of Nursing through the call logging sheet at reception. Remember that all calls must be logged in detail to ensure that the Director of Nursing is able to follow up each and every enquiry.Answering emergency care calls that come from any one of the Retirement Cottages, ensuring that the response to the cottage is carried out in the exact manner that you have been instructed to do so by the Director of Nursing.Please Note that under the regulations governing The Nursing Homes Act, a minimum of one Registered Nurse must be present in the nursing Home building at all times. The procedure for responding to calls from the Cottages must adhere to this law at all times as directed by the Director of Nursing.It should be the goal of all staff members of Amberley Home that the mission of the Home be upheld at all times with regard to providing excellence in levels of care in a respectful and dignified manner.
