Head of Compliance and Regulatory Counsel
My client is a venture-backed startup founded by seasoned executives with a track record of scaling global payments companies with a mission to transform how payments are made across Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on card payments and innovative methods like buy-now-pay-later and stablecoins. Following the completion of their pre-seed round earlier this year, they are now live in seven countries and preparing to expand the team in Ireland as they apply for an Electronic Money Institution license.

The Role
They are seeking a dynamic individual to take on a dual role as both Regulatory Counsel and Head of Compliance. In this role, you will be the cornerstone of our compliance and legal efforts, supporting the EMI license application, building out our regulatory framework, and providing legal support across the business. You will be supported by leadership with extensive compliance experience, ensuring you have the guidance you need as you step into this key position.
Responsibilities
Assist in constructing the compliance framework and supporting the EMI license application process.
Provide legal advice across the business, particularly in relation to payments, regulatory obligations, partnerships, and contract negotiation.
Once the framework is in place, manage business-as-usual compliance activities and contribute to the launch of new features and products from both legal and compliance perspectives.
Manage and update the Terms & Conditions and other core legal documents.
Participate in negotiations with service providers, support fundraising efforts, and help manage partnerships, including interactions with banks and card schemes.
Transition into a more strategic leadership role as the team grows, while remaining hands-on in the early stages.
Qualifications
You will have around five years of post-qualification experience and be eager to step into a PCF role. You should be confident in handling both legal and compliance matters and thrive in a startup environment where adaptability is key. Initially, the role will be hybrid until we establish our office in Ireland. Once the office is operational, the role will be office-first, with flexibility around how the workday is managed. Occasional travel may be required for regulatory meetings and team gatherings.
