Perioperative Healthcare Assistant - UPMC Aut Even

Overview of role:
The healthcare assistant (Peri-operative Care) is a member of the surgical team assisting in the care and management of patients undergoing surgical intervention and procedural sedation.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist in the preparation and checking of theatre equipment as per list and activity.
2. Work as a 2nd assistant to the surgeon assisting with surgical intervention as directed.
3. Complete checklists to ensure equipment and instrumentation are available and fit for purpose.
4. Stock Management.
5. Assist with the safe transfer of patients within the peri-operative setting, including inter-departmental transfers.
6. Assist in the positioning of patients and the use of pressure-relieving aids.
7. Assist with the collection of specimens as directed by the theatre nurse.
8. Receive specimens from surgical/anaesthetic team, ensure correct labeling, packaging, and requisition prior to safe transport to specimen area.
9. Replenish sterile stocks as appropriate, ensuring stock rotation.
10. Ensure specified procedure areas and trolleys are stocked.
11. Prepare and open sterile packs, instrument sets, sundries, and pour lotions.
12. Position relevant theatre equipment as appropriate.
13. Assist with gowning and gloving of theatre and medical staff.
14. Ensure items for disposal are correctly bagged/binned and ready for collection as per waste disposal policy.
15. Clean equipment surfaces, ensuring solutions used conform to infection control policies.
16. Report any faults of fabric, furniture, or equipment.
17. Undertake any other duties within the scope of the post as agreed with the theatre manager.
Endoscopy:
* Support the RGN in delivering effective and efficient patient care.
* Understand how information is obtained, transmitted, and stored during the delivery of the care service in endoscopy.
* Prepare the endoscopy area including the washroom.
* Ensure all endoscopes and supporting equipment are available and fit for purpose.
* Ensure consumables are available.
* Assist in the positioning of patients and the use of pressure-relieving aids.
* Be familiar with pre-cleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, storage, and transportation of endoscopes.
Qualifications & Experience:

* Excellent communication skills, including command of the English language to effectively carry out duties.
