Professor / Consultant Anaesthesiologist Cork University Hospital for 18.5 hours per week and University College, Cork for 18.5 hours
This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Hospital for 18.5 hours per week and University College, Cork for 18.5 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the Job
To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant’s area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer.
To ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services.
To work within the framework of the hospital / agency’s service plan and / or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer. Service planning for individual clinical services will be progressed through the Clinical Directorate structure or other arrangements as apply.

Information about the organisation
Cork University Hospital is the Model 4 hub for HSE Southwest and functions as the supra-regional trauma, cancer, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, obstetric, paediatric and critical care referral centre for the region. The Surgical Hub HSE SW is the latest addition to the CUH campus.
The Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Cork University Hospital currently employs 45 consultant anaesthesiologists with 85 doctors in training in anaesthesiology, critical care, and pain medicine. The Department provides anaesthesia, critical care, perioperative medicine services at CUH and Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH); anaesthesia and perioperative medicine services at South Infirmary Victoria Hospital (SIVUH) and Mallow General Hospital (MGH). Inpatient pain medicine services are provided to patients following surgery and/or injury at CUH, CUMH and SIVUH. Outpatient Pain services are located at SIVUH with an important outreach service to cancer services at CUH and Marymount University Hospital. As of September 2026, the Department of Anaesthesia CUH will also provide anaesthesia and perioperative medicine services at the Surgical Hub HSE SW.
The Critical Care Service in CUH is amongst the busiest in the country serving one of Ireland’s largest hospitals. The critical care medicine programme at CUH serves as a model 4 supra-regional referral centre for high level critical care medicine. The Critical Care Units at CUH provide up to level 3 critical care for patients in HSE Southwest.

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable. The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026: €289,899 €305,581 €322,109 €330,821 €339,533 €348,246 The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week. The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
