Details of Service
Bantry General Hospital provides acute general hospital services to the population of a large, rural geographical area encompassing West Cork and South Kerry.
The hospital has 118 beds and offers a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, and day care services, aligned with principles of equity, people-centeredness, quality, and accountability. It also includes a 24-bed HIQA-registered residential unit.
Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, based on geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019, and will become operational from 2024.
Each Health Region is responsible for population-specific planning, resourcing, and delivery of health and social care services, improving accountability and governance, and bringing decision-making closer to the community. These regions enable services that are:
* Integrated and locally planned
* Easier to access and navigate
* Available closer to home
Health Regions are geographically defined units that align community and hospital services. The HSE will maintain a leaner central organization with more services developed locally.
The HSE South West health region manages all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry, including:
* South / South West Hospital Group
* Cork Kerry Community Healthcare
* Midlands Louth Meath Community Health Organisation
* Dublin North City and County Community Healthcare Organisation
The Department of Population and Public Health is aligned with this region.
Services in the South West health region include:
* Acute hospitals
* Primary care services
* Community services
* Social care services
* Health and social care professionals
* Voluntary sector services
From 3rd March 2025, the South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare will become part of the HSE South West health region, with transition activities throughout 2025.
