Description
The service requires one worker to work as a member of a team in Sligo, providing a confidential, sympathetic, non-judgemental, and personal contact and support service for young people.
The work involves establishing and maintaining contact with schools, young people, and their families in a sympathetic and non-judgemental environment. It also includes personal contact and support for young people and liaising with TUSLA and other agencies as appropriate.
Purpose of the Job
To provide a sympathetic, confidential, non-judgemental, and personal contact and support to young people who may be opting out of available educational or training facilities, with the aim of enhancing their personal and social development, and supporting their re-integration into mainstream education and/or training where appropriate.
Duties
1. Liaison with schools, referral agencies, TUSLA Social Work Department through child protection & family welfare services, and other relevant statutory and voluntary agencies.
2. Responding to issues affecting family relationships and interactions with caring agencies.
3. Making contact with referred young people and their families, schools, etc., involving them in programs related to their needs where appropriate.
4. Familiarisation and contact with formal and informal youth groups in Sligo / Leitrim to develop support networks for young people based on individual needs.
5. Maintaining and updating records of young people as per service guidelines.
6. Developing specific activities and initiatives tailored to individual needs, in one-to-one or group settings.
7. Reporting regularly on service progress, referral sources, trends, and other relevant matters.
8. Proposing strategies and initiatives to improve service effectiveness.
9. Attending regular meetings with the Service Manager.
10. Keeping records, attending meetings, participating in training, and submitting required documentation.
11. Building caring and productive relationships with children and families to facilitate positive change.
12. Recognising and reporting risk factors.
13. Other duties as assigned, maintaining confidentiality.
14. At least 22 hours per week must involve direct contact with young people.
15. Availability for residential weekends if required by management.
16. Participation in summer camps as needed.
17. Other duties as determined from time to time.
18. Possessing good interpersonal skills, motivation, initiative, resourcefulness, flexibility, and willingness to work out of hours.
19. Minimum 1-year relevant experience.
20. Degree required, preferably in Childcare, Youth Work, Community Work, Social Studies, Sports and Recreation, or equivalent.
21. Must hold a full driver’s license, own a car, and have Class 2 insurance coverage.
Hours and Salary
The Youth Support Worker role involves 39 hours per week.
Annual leave starts at 21 days and increases to 26 days.
Salary is €37,504 gross annually.
Travel expenses will be reimbursed at the state rate.
A six-month probationary period applies.
