Automation Engineer – VPE Systems

We are seeking an experienced
Automation Engineer
to support Vendor Packaged Equipment (VPE) systems within a highly regulated biopharmaceutical manufacturing environment. This role will focus on automation strategy, system ownership, and continuous improvement across complex, high-value equipment platforms.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide technical ownership and administration of equipment control systems within a GMP-regulated facility.
* Lead and support automation system improvements, specification development, and documentation control.
* Act as system owner for key PLC/SCADA-based platforms, ensuring compliance, reliability, and performance.
* Drive root cause investigations, corrective actions, and lifecycle management of automation systems.
* Support new product and technology introductions through engineering assessments and system configuration changes.
* Manage change controls, CAPAs, and validation documentation in line with quality standards.
* Ensure robust backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes are in place.
* Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, and Quality to deliver on project and operational objectives.
* Champion safe working practices and compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards.
Experience & Technical Skills
* Proven experience in manufacturing automation within a
biopharma or API
facility.
* Strong hands-on expertise with
PLC/SCADA systems
(Siemens preferred), including programming, configuration, and troubleshooting.
* Familiarity with
Profibus/Profinet networks
and
OSIsoft PI Data Historian
.
* Experienced in
GAMP 5
,
ANSI/ISA S88/S95
, and
21 CFR Part 11
compliance.
* Strong understanding of
network architecture
(TCP/IP, firewalls, routing, switching, domain integration).
* Experienced in developing and implementing automation strategies for new technologies and product introductions.
* Proficient in change control, validation, and CAPA processes in a GMP setting.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in
Automation, Electrical, Chemical, Biotech, or Computer Engineering
(or related discipline).
* Minimum
5 years' experience
in automation within a GMP manufacturing environment.
