Primary Duties And Responsibilities

UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic are currently recruiting for the role of Chief Pharmacist. This is a fixed term contract covering a period of leave.


Duties & Responsibilities Include

* Act at all times to ensure that the care and safety of patients is assigned the highest priority.
* Understand, model, and promote UPMC core values: Quality and Safety, Dignity and Respect, Caring and Listening, Responsibility and Integrity, Excellence and Innovation.
* Have a strategic focus on the development of the UPMC Pharmacy Service in line with legislation, national guidelines, and professional best practice.
* Ensure legal and ethical pharmaceutical practice, the provision of the pharmacy service and ensure that operations comply with all relevant requirements of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI).
* Provide advice, information, and direction to relevant Pharmacy, Medical, Nursing and/or other staff on best practice in relation to all aspects of medicines management, including the proper and economic use of drugs and alternative types of drugs and medicines.
* Maintain accurate and complete records for purchasing, quality control and dispensing, and other aspects of the Pharmacy service as agreed with the Director of Pharmacy.
* Analyse data, supervise, and prepare reports relevant to the Pharmacy services in UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic for dissemination to relevant stakeholders across UPMC.
* Be fully conversant with best practice and relevant competency frameworks for the delivery of Pharmacy services.
* Manage the safe and cost-effective entry of new medications onto the hospital formulary, supporting colleagues in Pharmacy and other disciplines with expert advice and education as appropriate.
* Work closely with the Pharmacy Technician Lead (Procurement and Technical Services Integration) to manage medicine stock shortages within UPMC.
* Lead and oversee the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) required for all aspects of the Pharmacy service in UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic and ensure that these are updated and implemented in line with changing practices locally, nationally and internationally, and in accordance with Pharmacy law.
* Contribute to the provision of medicines information and advice on drug availability and procurement to clinical staff in relation to medicines.
* Collaborate with senior Pharmacy colleagues across UPMC to oversee the development of medicine information resources for clinical colleagues and patients.
* Collaborate with colleagues in the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to optimise medication workflows.
* Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines as part of the MDT.
* Identify and address deficiencies in medications management systems and processes, where applicable.
* Highlight discrepancies, incidents, or service deficits to the Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Pharmacy as appropriate.
* Proactively identify, assess, manage, and monitor risks within his/her area of responsibility.
* Ensure proper procedures are followed regarding accidents and investigations, including reporting in line with the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act 2005, including risk assessments and safety policies.
* Lead reporting on medication incidents/near misses to support risk management and quality improvement.
* Oversee compliance audits related to medicines, including labeling, storage, dispensing, and documentation.
* Plan and organize a risk-informed audit program aligned with service goals.
* Develop and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the Pharmacy service, such as capacity, workload, drug costs, quality, and safety metrics.
* Assist in drug usage reporting and analysis for finance and management.
* Support drug budget management through reporting, analysis, and horizon scanning.
* Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and hospital committees (e.g., Clinical Governance, Drugs and Therapeutics, Medication Safety).
* Act as a leader and role model within UPMC Pharmacy, UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, and UPMC Ireland.
* Build partnerships within UPMC Ireland and across the health system to develop services that meet patient and organizational needs.
* Propose and lead innovation and technological improvements in pharmacy services.
* Coordinate service delivery with pharmacy staff to ensure teamwork and efficiency.
* Assist in recruitment, staff development, mentoring, and performance management.
* Implement systems for staff induction, ongoing training, and professional development.
* Support pharmacy staff in skill enhancement and role expansion.
* Promote research activities, audit, and publication within the pharmacy team.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy, including deputizing as needed.
* Support the development and implementation of the UPMC Pharmacy Transformation Strategy.
* Engage in continuous professional development and adhere to HIQA standards and hospital accreditation processes.


Essential Qualifications & Experience

* Registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland or eligible for registration.
* At least 5 years of satisfactory post-registration hospital experience or equivalent.
* Specialized knowledge and management ability relevant to the role.
* Proven hospital practice experience, including clinical pharmacy and management.
* Evidence of ongoing CPD and role-specific learning.


Ability to Demonstrate

* Excellent planning, organizational, and resource management skills.
* Strong leadership, interpersonal, and people management skills.
* Experience in change management and quality improvement initiatives.


Desirable

* Formal management and leadership training or equivalent experience.
* Experience with hospital accreditation and HIQA inspections.
* Experience in Good Clinical Practice.
* Post-graduate qualification such as MSc or diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.
