Join Us in Powering the Future of Energy Infrastructure
At RPS Tetra Tech, we're driving innovation in energy and utilities to shape a safer, more sustainable future. As Technical Lead, you'll be the trusted authority on complex gas transmission projects, delivering robust designs for pipelines and above-ground installations that meet the highest safety and regulatory standards. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll combine deep engineering expertise with mentoring and capability building, influencing major infrastructure programmes that power communities across Ireland and beyond. If you're passionate about technical excellence and want to make a lasting impact on the energy landscape, we'd love to hear from you.

Purpose & Scope of the Role
As Technical Lead within our Energy & Utilities team, you will act as a senior technical authority for complex gas transmission projects, including pipelines and above-ground installations. This design-focused role spans the full lifecycle—from concept and feasibility through detailed design and construction support—ensuring solutions meet stringent safety, regulatory, and operational requirements. You will produce and review calculations, drawings, and technical documentation, chair design reviews, and present recommendations to clients and stakeholders. A key responsibility is mentoring junior engineers, setting technical direction, and maintaining high standards of quality and compliance with relevant standards and client requirements.

Your Impact in this Position
In the short term, you will establish yourself as the go-to technical lead on live transmission and station projects, demonstrating strong design expertise and taking ownership of critical workstreams. Over the medium term, you will lead delivery across multiple assignments, act as delegated approver for the discipline, shape design methods and technical governance, and build team capability through mentoring and development. Longer term, you will influence major infrastructure programmes within the Gas Networks Ireland framework and beyond, grow the team's technical breadth, and progress toward broader discipline leadership or director-level pathways.

Core Capabilities
Mechanical Engineering Design Expertise:
You will bring a degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least ten years of relevant experience in gas engineering, with a strong focus on design for high‑pressure transmission pipelines and installations. Chartered Engineer status or progress toward it is highly desirable. Your expertise will include pipeline routing under environmental and landowner constraints, gas installation systems design and layout, and the ability to validate operability through calculations and technical assurance. Familiarity with I.S 328, IGEM, ASME, API standards and material specifications is expected, alongside practical experience applying these in real‑world scenarios.

Technical Communication & Client Engagement
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are essential. You will prepare and present technical reports, drawings and calculations to expert audiences, chair design reviews and lead client meetings. Membership of a recognised professional institution such as Engineers Ireland, IGEM or relevant equivalent is required, as this underpins your credibility when engaging with clients and stakeholders. You will demonstrate the ability to justify and defend design decisions, resolve disagreements constructively, and provide authoritative advice supported by evidence and standards.

Full Project Lifecycle Understanding
You will have comprehensive experience across the full project lifecycle—scoping, feasibility, preliminary and detailed design, procurement, construction support and commissioning. This ensures that your design decisions are informed by downstream impacts on cost, schedule and operability. While this is not a Project Manager role, you will be proactive in keeping projects on track and coordinating technical resources effectively. Exposure to multidisciplinary environments and familiarity with lifecycle assurance processes such as HAZID and HAZOP will be advantageous.

Technical Leadership & Team Development
As a senior technical lead, you will review outputs to approval level, set direction for the team and mentor junior engineers to build capability and confidence. Your leadership will extend to training, guiding technical resources and fostering a collaborative, high‑performance culture. Experience in coaching and developing staff, combined with the ability to mobilise resources and maintain delivery momentum, is critical to success.

Standards Compliance & Safety-by-Design
You will demonstrate rigorous application of Irish and UK gas standards, including IS 328, IGEM publications, SR 25 for hazardous area classification, and relevant API and ASME codes. A strong awareness of safety‑by‑design principles is essential, ensuring that solutions conform with relevant standards and client requirements, are practical and are economically viable. Familiarity with DSEAR and ATEX requirements in the context of SR 25 is desirable, as is competence in hazard identification and operability studies. Your ability to interpret standards and apply them to deliver robust, safe and efficient designs will be a defining capability.

Qualifications And Experience

* Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
* Minimum of ten years' relevant experience in gas engineering with a strong design focus.
* Membership of a recognised professional institution such as IGEM.
* Demonstrable experience with Irish and UK gas standards (IS 328, SR 25), IGEM guidelines, and applicable API and ASME codes.
* Proven ability to produce and review calculations, drawings, and technical documentation to approval level.
* Desirable: Chartered Engineer status and experience in hazard identification and operability studies.
