Offer description

Overview
Mbryonics is at the forefront of free space optical communications.
Our product portfolio covers a wide range of emerging technologies from photonic integrated circuits to advanced optical systems and embedded software solutions.
Our optical communications systems are integrated and deployed in satellite communications systems.
As part of our expansion, we are seeking a suitably motivated Optical Design Engineer to join our group.
The mission for the Optical Design Engineer is to design and industrialise the next generation of optical systems for our satellite optical communications terminals and precision optical metrology equipment.
The successful candidate will work closely with the optical and mechanical engineering teams in the design and development of bulk optical components, optical systems and precision metrology processes.
In addition to developing optical satellite payloads, the development of novel high-precision metrology and ground support equipment is fundamental to enable volume production of high-specification optical instruments.
What You'll Do
Take customer and stakeholder requirements and develop first-order designs to optimise system performance, collaborating with disciplines such as optomechanics, mechatronics and optical assembly integration and test.
Elaborate designs for manufacturing through detailed design analysis considering manufacturing tolerances, operating environment conditions, material properties and surface scatter.
Apply a highly creative approach with a solid understanding of refractive and reflective optical design principles.
Background in imaging systems or optical metrology systems is highly desirable.
Communicate effectively to incorporate key parameters, lead technical discussions with suppliers, and participate in meetings with customers.
Document and report work and generate ISO component drawings.
Coordinate with other competencies to meet deliverable milestones; requires multidisciplinary technical knowledge, good communication, and self-motivation to develop solutions.
Serve as a technical owner for one or more optical subsystems, responsible for design, product development and implementation.
Develop prototypes and transfer to production, with clear documentation of work.
Present results to the team and stakeholders.
Interact with cross-functional groups and build constructive relationships across the organisation.
Create knowledge transfer from design to the factory and provide customer support as a technical expert.
Who You Are
Masters or higher (PhD) in optical design or similar, or equivalent industry experience.
Minimum 3 years experience in optical engineering, ideally in designing optical systems for coherent light, or in design of imaging systems.
Demonstrable experience in Zemax OpticStudio, Matlab/Simulink or similar software.
Advanced knowledge of Matlab and/or Python for macro development.
Expertise and experience with optical design and optical metrology of rotationally-symmetric optical components is essential; additional experience with diffractive or freeform optical design is highly beneficial.
Strong drive to improve one's system understanding.
Model-based design.
Strong understanding of optical aberrations and their origins in optical systems.
Numerical analysis of data for performance modelling.
Practical experience with optical system assembly and metrology.
Desirable
Experience in stray light simulation and analysis.
Experience in optomechanical design and collaboration with mechanical engineers to optimise optomechanical designs.
Experience in design, modelling and manufacture of freeform optics.
A background in optical instrumentation for space.
What's In It For You
