Position Overview
The Commercial Director will lead the commercial strategy and business development activities of the company, ensuring sustainable growth within the Irish and broader European renewable energy markets. This role is responsible for developing strong client relationships, identifying new market opportunities, overseeing bid and tender processes, and driving profitability across all service lines.
The ideal candidate has deep sector knowledge in renewables or engineering, coupled with strong commercial, contractual, and strategic leadership capabilities. This position operates on a hybrid basis, requiring a minimum of two days per week onsite at the Dublin head office, with flexibility for remote work / onsite on other days.
Key Responsibilities:
Commercial Strategy & Leadership
* Develop and implement a long-term commercial strategy aligned with company objectives and growth plans.
* Lead commercial forecasting, pricing strategies, and revenue planning.
* Identify and evaluate new business opportunities, partnerships, and market segments across Ireland and Europe.
* Provide strategic leadership to commercial teams, fostering a culture of high performance and accountability. Business Development
* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, developers, utilities, EPCs, OEMs, supply chain partners, and industry stakeholders.
* Oversee the end-to-end bid/tender process for major renewable engineering contracts.
* Lead negotiations on commercial agreements, framework contracts, and strategic partnerships.
* Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and client meetings domestically and internationally.
Project & Contract Management
* Oversee contractual risk management across all projects, ensuring compliance with Irish and EU standards.
* Provide commercial guidance during project execution, resolving contractual or financial issues as needed.
* Ensure that commercial processes, governance frameworks, and approval structures are robust and consistently applied. Financial & Operational Performance
* Drive profitability across all services through effective pricing, margin analysis, and commercial controls.
* Collaborate with finance and operations teams to monitor performance metrics and ensure accurate reporting.
* Support CAPEX and OPEX planning for new services, technologies, or market expansions. Regulatory & Market Insight
* Maintain up-to-date insight into Irish and EU renewable energy policies, grid regulations, planning requirements, and commercial frameworks.
* Assess competitive landscape and emerging technologies (e.g., offshore wind, hydrogen, energy storage, grid modernisation).
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential
* 10+ years' experience in commercial leadership roles, ideally within renewable energy, engineering, utilities, or infrastructure.
* Proven track record in business development, contract negotiation, and securing major projects.
* Strong knowledge of Irish and EU renewable energy markets.
* Experience managing P&L, forecasts, and commercial governance structures.
* Demonstrable leadership skills with the ability to motivate cross-functional teams.
* Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
* Ability to work onsite in Dublin a minimum of two days per week.
Preferred
* Degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, or related field; MBA advantageous.
* Experience working with EPC contractors, TSOs/DSOs (e.g., ESB Networks, EirGrid), or large-scale renewable developers.
* Familiarity with contract forms (e.g., NEC, FIDIC, bespoke engineering contracts).
* Experience in international or multi-market project delivery.
