Overview Job Title: Senior Executive Engineer Employer: Kildare County Council County: Kildare Closing Date: 3pm, Thursday, 5th February 2026 Starting Salary: €79,090 About the Employer County Kildare is located in the mid-east region of Ireland in the province of Leinster and is one of twelve Local Authorities comprising the Eastern and Midlands Region.
It has a population of 247,774 (2022 Census) which is one of the fasted growing counties in Ireland over the past 20 years at a rate of 11% in comparison to the national growth rate of 8%.
The principal towns are Naas, Newbridge, Celbridge, Leixlip, Maynooth, Athy, Kildare, Clane, Kilcock, Sallins and Monasterevin.
Strategically, the future planning and economic development of the county is guided and informed by the Eastern Midlands Regional Assembly's Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES).
The towns of Maynooth, Leixlip, Celbridge and Kilcock are located within the Metropolitan Area Strategic Plan (MASP) area.
Census figures show that Kildare is one of the fastest growing and youngest population centres in the country; with the highest proportion of people aged 0-24 in the state Population growth combined with proximity to Dublin, accessibility via the M4, M7 & M9 Motorways, in addition to three national rail lines, is driving demand for housing, commercial, industrial developments in addition to the necessary social and community infrastructure required to support the existing and growing communities.
The north and western part of the county is comprised of significant peatland areas associated with the Bog of Allen, and as Bord Na Mona prepares to cease peat extraction, there are new opportunities and challenges for diversification.
The County canal and river systems provide unique opportunities for the development of both greenways and blueways, and the Council is engaged in the development of long-distance routes along the Royal Canal, Grand Canal and the development of the Barrow Blueway.
About the Role The Senior Executive Engineer will be required to lead a team or teams and to provide technical and managerial support across all local authority service areas and to liaise with external agencies and stakeholders.
They may deputise for the Senior Engineer Senior Executive Engineers are appointed to a wide variety of roles across the Council.
The role can include responsibility for the management and successful delivery of a range of projects; effective delivery of a range of services and responsibility for the management and supervision of assigned staff.
The Senior Executive Engineer duties include but are not limited to the following: Implement the agreed strategies as directed by the Senior Engineer to meet, expand or improve the range, quantity or quality of existing services provided by the Council; Implement, develop and maintain in-house quality management systems; Manage staff and to promote the training and development of such staff; Represent the Executive at statutory meetings, at consultation processes and public events; Identify and agree individual work programmes, targets and deadlines and ensure their subsequent implementation and delivery; Build effective teams, motivate and maintain their commitment while maintaining sound employee relations and morale as relevant, in accordance with good employment practice and relevant legislation; Prepare budgets and ensure that works are implemented within allocated budgets, and in compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations concerning procurement, planning etc.
Develop and maintain relationships with various government departments and external agencies to ensure co-operation and co-ordination in the implementation of work programmes; Carry out duties in an impartial manner that enhances public trust and confidence in the local authority decision making process; Present your work to an audience in a clear, concise and understandable manner, when required.
Carry out duties with a clear understanding of the political and local context of the local authority.
Ensure compliance with Health & safety legislation and regulations, and the Councils corporate Health & Safety systems and; Any other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.
About You Candidates shall on the latest date for receipt of completed applications:(a) (i) hold an honours bachelors degree (level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)) in Engineering accredited at CEng or CEng with FL level by Engineers Ireland*; OR (ii) hold an ordinary bachelors degree (level 7 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)) in Engineering AND a post-graduate masters degree (level 9 on the NFQ) in Engineering; OR (iii) hold a masters degree (level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)) in Engineering attained after completing an integrated masters level programme of at least 4 years duration and which is accredited at CEng level by Engineers Ireland or an equivalent accreditation body internationally; OR (iv) have achieved the registered professional title of Chartered Engineer and be registered on the Register of Chartered Engineers of Engineers Ireland or of a professional institute of another country and recognised by Engineers Ireland as of equivalent status.(b) have at least seven years satisfactory relevant experience of engineering work;(c) possess a high standard of technical training and experience;(d) possess a high standard of administrative and management experience;(e) have a satisfactory knowledge of public service organisation or the ability to acquire such knowledge.
