As a leading manufacturing Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with labs and industrial pilot lines in Dublin and Mullingar, IMR works with leading global and indigenous brands to demystify, and derisk new and emerging technologies and to deliver high-impact collaborative research and services to enable advanced manufacturing for a broad range of clients across Ireland's manufacturing network.

What IMR offers:

* An opportunity to contribute to the national economic growth agenda
* A competitive salary and pension
* A friendly and flexible working environment with State-of-the-art Innovation Centres
* Lots of diversity in terms of people, technology, projects and ideas
* The opportunity to join a dynamic and committed team
* Interaction with a diverse range of industrial clients and state partners
* 5 weeks holidays

The Sustainable Manufacturing Team:

IMR's Energy unit is on a mission to demystify and de-risk energy solutions that improve efficiency, enable decarbonisation, and enhance resilience and competitiveness for industry while contributing to wider co-benefits for the national energy landscape and national sustainability goals.

The Role:

Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR) is seeking an Energy Technologist to support project activities related to energy flexibility and energy usage patterns within industrial operations, and their potential contribution to the wider energy grid at Technologist level on a 23-month contract basis. Reporting to the Sustainable Manufacturing Director, the Energy Technologist will be responsible for creating digital representations of factory energy systems, enabling real-time prediction of energy demand and estimation of available flexibility for grid interaction and demand response programs. This role combines technical analysis, computational modelling, and stakeholder engagement, with a primary focus on energy flexibility and demand-side management (DSM), and energy systems modelling in industrial and commercial contexts. Beyond this, the role will also support related research activities, proposal development, and industrial engagement across the Energy Programme.

Key Responsibilities:

* Develop energy consumption models of key industrial processes, systems, and equipment to represent the real-time energy behaviour of factories and production systems.
* Simulate energy demand profiles and flexibility potential under varying operational conditions.
* Integrate process, equipment, and environmental data into unified models.
* Analyse historical and real-time energy data from industrial sites.
* Apply machine learning and predictive analytics to forecast energy consumption and flexibility potential.
* Develop algorithms to quantify demand-side flexibility (e.g. load shifting, peak shaving, energy storage).
* Collaborate with control engineers and IoT specialists to ensure integration of digital models with factory monitoring systems (SCADA, EMS, BMS, MES, etc.).
* Contribute to the design of energy management and optimisation strategies compatible with grid interaction.
* Conduct state-of-the-art reviews on industrial flexibility and digital modelling approaches, with awareness of computational efficiency and model performance limitations.
* Present research outcomes to internal stakeholders, project partners, and external audiences.
* Publish findings in academic journals and technical reports.

Required
Skills and Experience:

* A Master's degree or PhD in Energy Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
* 5+ years of experience in energy system modelling, simulation, or industrial energy analysis.
* Proven experience with energy data analytics, digital models, or predictive modelling.
* Hands-on experience with tools such as Python, MATLAB, Simulink, Modelica, or similar platforms, for data analysis, modelling, and algorithm development.
* Strong understanding of energy systems, flexibility markets, and demand-side management concepts.
* Understanding of industrial processes and energy-consuming systems (motors, compressors, thermal systems, HVAC, etc.).
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multi-partner research or innovation projects, with experience in coordinating tasks, managing timelines, and delivering project objectives.
* Knowledge of the Irish electricity market, including grid operations, regulatory frameworks, connection processes, capacity constraints, and demand response mechanisms, desirable.
* Understanding of key decarbonisation and energy systems trends in Ireland and the EU, from regulations to public commitments and understanding of the energy transition from the industry sector point of view, desirable.
* Familiarity with IoT / sensor data integration and control systems, desirable.

Location:

IMR offices are located in Rathcoole, Co Dublin and Mullingar, Co Westmeath. We offer a hybrid working model. Travel between offices and client sites will be required from time to time.

Salary & Benefits:

This position will command a package consisting of basic salary (€65,890 - €71,797 depending on qualifications and experience), employer pension contribution and 5 weeks holidays.
