About the Role
The purpose of the role is to provide a nursing service for Homeless clients who are admitted to the Dublin Simon Residential Health and Addiction Treatment Services.
The role includes assessment of the health needs of clients which addresses their physical, social, psychological, mental health, addiction, cultural, and health needs.
The nurse is responsible for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of clients throughout their stay.
This is done in conjunction with the visiting GP's and members of the Residential teams.
Location: Usher's Island Treatment Facility.
Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week, 7-day liability (broken down as three 12-hour shifts a week).
Responsibilities
Effectively liaise with a range of service providers both voluntary and statutory in order to assist in the assessment of referrals to the unit.
Complete all administrative tasks such as report writing, maintenance of accurate nursing and medical records, up-to-date client case notes, and relevant form filling to ensure that the unit runs smoothly, safely and effectively.
Facilitate groups through an effective health education and promotion programme to ensure clients receive relevant information for making informed decisions.
Liaise with the visiting G.P. regarding admissions, prescribing of medications and addressing the health needs of all clients in the service.
Qualifications
Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) or Registered General Nurse (RGN) on the live register maintained by An Bord Altranais for the relevant qualification(s).
Experience and Competencies
Minimum of 2 years post-registration experience.
Knowledge of ethical principles and code of professional conduct articulated in the ABA "Code of Professional Conduct" document.
Ability to determine own scope of practice and formulate decisions about care using the principles in the Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework.
Responds appropriately to instances of unsafe or unprofessional practice.
Advocates for the rights of clients.
Maintains confidentiality in respect of records and interactions.
Practices in a way that acknowledges differences in beliefs and cultural practices of clients/colleagues.
Accepts responsibility and accountability for consequences of own actions or omissions.
Recognises own abilities and level of professional competency.
Uses the Roper-Logan-Tierney Model of Nursing to assess on admission, set goals, plan interventions, carry out care and evaluate progress.
Utilises knowledge of homeless clients and/or addiction when carrying out admission assessments.
Aware of principles of medication management and storage/checking procedures for the use of MDAs.
Effectively utilises tools to monitor alcohol withdrawal.
Establishes and maintains caring therapeutic interpersonal relationships with clients and relevant others.
Demonstrates ability to work as a team member.
Collaborates with all members of the health care team when making decisions regarding clients.
Communicates effectively with external agencies.
Understands how to manage interpersonal conflict and how unresolved issues can impact service.
Provides evidence of ongoing professional development.
Contributes to the learning experiences of colleagues through support, teaching and sharing of knowledge.
Educates clients to maintain and promote health.
Experience working with homeless clients and/or with a history of addiction.

Knowledge of the homeless sector and the effects that homelessness has on clients' health and well-being.
Has experience facilitating groups.
Has evidence of involvement in a change management project.
Has evidence of experience in developing policies, procedures and guidelines.
