Consultant Psychiatrist – Old Age Psychiatry

A supportive mental health service, a growing older adult population, and a coastal city known for its quality of life, Waterford offers an exceptional opportunity for a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry looking for impact, stability, and balance.
Waterford is the South East’s major urban centre, serving a mixed urban–rural population of 120,000+ people with a significant and expanding older adult cohort. The Old Age Psychiatry team provides community-based and clinic-based care across Waterford city and county, with strong MDT structures, close integration with primary care, and excellent links with University Hospital Waterford.
The region is known for its continuity of care, structured governance, and consultant-led service development, making it an excellent fit for UK/EU-trained psychiatrists seeking a progressive yet supportive environment.
What you can expect:

€233,527 – €280,513 Consultant Salary (Public Only Contract 2023)
€11,015 On-call Allowance
€12,000 CME allowance each year
€8,000 Research & Innovation Fund
37-hour workweek
30 days annual leave + 10 public holidays

What the team is looking for:
A Consultant Psychiatrist with recognised expertise in Old Age Psychiatry, including:

IMC Specialist Registration (or eligibility)
Specialist Training in Old Age Psychiatry
Experience managing complex presentations in older adults (dementia, mood disorders, psychosis, comorbidity)
Commitment to community-focused care and integrated clinical pathways
Ability to travel within the region for satellite clinics

Regional population supported: 120,000+
Older adult cohort (65+): ~18%, above national averages
Strong MDT support: psychology, nursing, social work, OT, physiotherapy
Clear governance structures under South East Community Healthcare (CHO 5)
Presents a wide range of clinical needs: dementia, late-life mood disorders, psychosis, and frailty-related complexity
