With a proud history and an ambitious vision for the future, the FAI is committed to fostering excellence on and off the pitch, ensuring the game is inclusive, accessible, and a source of national pride.Purpose of the RoleThe Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Public & Government Affairs to play a central role in shaping the future of Irish football. This newly created position within the Marketing & Communications Division is designed to strengthen the FAI's voice across the political, governmental, community, and business landscape in Ireland.The successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of a comprehensive public affairs strategy that advances the FAI's strategic objectives, enhances the organisation's reputation, and promotes the interests of Irish football at all levels. They will ensure meaningful engagement with a wide range of stakeholders—most notably Government departments, political representatives, public bodies, and key partners across sport, business, and civil society.Reporting directly to the Director of Marketing & Communications, the role will collaborate closely with the CEO, the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and colleagues across the organisation. They will be responsible for setting strategic direction, driving impactful advocacy initiatives, and monitoring, evaluating, and communicating progress.This role will require flexibility, including attendance at international and domestic football matches, often in the evenings and at weekends, to represent the FAI and engage with key stakeholders.Key ResponsibilitiesProven excellence in public affairs, government relations, and strategic stakeholder engagement, with strong knowledge of best practice in influencing, lobbying, advocacy, and negotiations.Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate compelling messages on behalf of the FAI.Strong relationship-building skills with a customer-focused approach and the ability to foster trust internally and externally.High proficiency in researching, analysing, and translating complex information into actionable insights.Excellent time-management skills and the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment.The presence and credibility to command respect across political, community, sporting, and media audiences.Experience in budget planning and management.Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and travel for domestic and international games and events.Knowledge of the football landscape, including the structures, stakeholders, and key issues affecting the game in Ireland, is highly desirable.Person SpecificationWe are seeking a candidate who is deeply purpose-driven with strong personal values, a passion for Irish football, and a commitment to advancing the game at national and community level.Experience and QualificationsEssential:A degree-level qualification or equivalent experience, ideally in public policy, legislation, public affairs, political communications, or communications.Direct experience engaging with Ireland's political system and a strong network of political and public-sector contacts.Significant experience engaging and collaborating with senior stakeholders across Government, local authorities, sport, and community bodies.A minimum of 10 years' professional experience in a senior public affairs, advocacy, government relations, or corporate communications role.Clear and in-depth knowledge of the political, governmental, and climate-action landscape in Ireland, and its relevance to sport and national development.A proven track record in designing and delivering successful advocacy campaigns, including leading policy initiatives and strategic programmes.Experience liaising, negotiating, and building relationships with a diverse range of organisations and individuals, including media, political representatives, senior civil servants, and industry partners.A full, clean driving licence.Desirable:Strong understanding of the legislative process, parliamentary procedures, and policy-making timelines.Knowledge of European climate policy and broader developments affecting sport, infrastructure, and community investment.Understanding of environmental and sustainability issues, particularly those relevant to energy, climate, and the operations of sporting organisations.Ability to thrive under pressure, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality outcomes to tight deadlines.Knowledge of the football landscape, including its structures,
