Post Status: Full‑time
Department: Medical Directorate, Beaumont Hospital
Location: Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9
Reports to: CNM 3 / Directorate Nurse Manager Medical 2
Salary: Appointment will be made on Clinical Nurse Specialist / Candidate Clinical Nurse Specialist Payscale in line with Government pay policy
Hours of work: 37.5 hours (1 WTE)

Position Summary
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing, remitting condition that requires ongoing management. Beaumont Hospital serves a cohort of 2000 IBD patients and manages a transition service for adolescents with IBD between Crumlin & Beaumont. The post holder is expected to demonstrate team leadership and management in maintaining and developing a high‑quality service to patients with IBD, and will be responsible for the day‑to‑day management of patients in inpatient and clinic settings.
Responsibilities

Clinical Focus – Establish and maintain a high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing service; accept and manage referrals and provide an inpatient IBD service pathway; coordinate new treatments and refer to infusion facilities or homecare services; participate in planning and carrying out care for patients attending the IBD service; provide support to families and significant others; offer outreach support for patients at home; attend IBD nurse‑led outpatient clinics and coordinate visits; assess patients for referral to specialist services and report promptly to the consultant; coordinate relevant services for treatment preparation; attend multidisciplinary team meetings; educate patients about diagnoses and treatments; foster good working relationships with all members of the clinical team; maintain accurate clinical records; demonstrate specialist knowledge and clinical expertise; comply with hospital policies and procedures; be actively involved in preparing and implementing policies and nursing guidelines; demonstrate leadership ability and good communication skills; participate in transition clinics; provide ongoing nursing assessment and care after discharge (outpatient and day clinics, hospital admissions, home visits); attend biological virtual clinics and assist in biosimilar switch programmes; manage the IBD nurse advice line.
Patient Advocate – Provide an efficient, high‑quality service; respect the needs of each patient; act as a contact person for IBD patients attending other departments or outside the hospital; provide patients and families with contact details for the IBD nurse specialist service; be aware of existing resources and services such as social services, support groups and entitlements; advocate for patients undergoing clinical trials; participate in team discussions regarding treatment for IBD patients; facilitate the development of information leaflets for patients and families.
Education, Training and Self‑Development – Create and maintain an evidence‑based teaching, learning and practice environment; act as an effective role model, mentor and staff leader; identify and utilise teaching, learning and practice opportunities; ensure availability of appropriate educational resources for patients and families; maintain and update knowledge of professional development and current trends in IBD nursing; attend staff development programmes; discuss present performance and future needs with the Directorate Nurse Manager.
Audit and Research – Ensure own practice is compliant with best practice; participate in regular audit of own clinical practice; develop a patient‑centred quality assurance programme; use research findings to influence care; set objectives and develop policies, procedures and standards for the IBD nursing service; identify areas for research; promote research‑based practice among staff; participate in departmental research; assist in producing an annual department report; evaluate audit results and research findings with nursing management and MDT colleagues.
Consultancy – Provide leadership in clinical practice; act as a resource and role model for IBD nursing practice; establish collegial partnerships; support primary care teams; develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all members of the MDT and other health‑care professionals; use specialist knowledge to support general nursing practice; participate in change management; attend gastroenterology conferences and committees; lecture and disseminate knowledge.

Qualifications

Mandatory – Registered nurse or midwife on the active Register of Nurses and Midwives; at least 1 year post‑registration full‑time experience (or equivalent aggregate) in the relevant nursing division; at least 1 year experience in the specialist area of dermatology; completion of a post‑registration programme of study at qualification level 9 or higher (or equivalent ECTS credits); continuing professional development relevant to the specialist area; ability to practice safely and effectively within scope of practice.
Desirable – Completion of a management course.
