What We Need Help With
We're looking for a commercially focused and technically strong Head of Technical to lead our food safety, quality, hygiene, and compliance functions. This is a senior leadership role responsible for ensuring our products meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance, while supporting innovation and continuous improvement across the business.
You'll lead a team of 14, including specialists in product development, hygiene, compliance, and systems, and work closely with production, supply chain, and commercial teams to deliver excellence.
Responsibilities
* Lead the development and engagement of the business in an improved food safety culture.
* Lead and develop the Technical team, fostering a high-performance and inclusive environment.
* Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and standards (e.g., BRCGS) through robust systems and continuous improvement.
* Manage relationships and inspections with regulatory authorities (e.g., BRC, DAFM).
* Oversee internal and external audits, ensuring full readiness for customer and regulatory inspections.
* Lead the development, implementation, and review of the site's HACCP plan.
* Manage non-conformance investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of preventive measures.
* Maintain and evolve the company's Quality Management System and processes.
* Oversee data collection, analysis, and reporting for validations and performance indicators.
* Investigate and resolve product complaints, recalls, and quality incidents.
* Ensure robust traceability systems are in place for effective incident management.
* Partner with production and supply chain to improve product quality and process efficiency.
* Provide technical expertise to support NPD, sales, and supply chain teams.
* Lead and support the Process Compliance team, including training, guidance, and performance management.
* Champion a culture of continuous improvement and food safety awareness across the organisation.
* Ensure technical governance meets internal, external, legal, and customer requirements.
Essential Requirements
* Proven experience in a fast-paced food manufacturing environment at a senior level.
* Familiarity with BRCGS and HACCP systems.
* Experience with customer complaint handling and root cause analysis.
* Knowledge of traceability systems and incident management.
* Commercially focused with strong business acumen.
* Experience leading technical teams and managing cross-functional collaboration.
* Strong understanding of food safety standards, regulatory requirements, and audit processes.
* Experience dealing with retailers and their systems, as well as the Department of Agriculture.
* Experience implementing or working with IT-based paperless solutions for production and quality.
* Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under pressure.
* Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
