Role Overview
We are looking for a Substation Design Engineer to lead the technical delivery of high-voltage substation projects (38kV-400kV) across Ireland. The role spans the full project lifecycle, from tendering through detailed design to construction, ensuring compliance with Irish Grid Codes, EirGrid/ESB standards, and relevant EU directives. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise, commercial awareness, and proven experience in transmission and distribution substation design.
Key Responsibilities
Tendering & Proposal Support
Review tender documentation and client specifications (e.g. ESB Networks).
Develop concept designs, single-line diagrams, and material take-offs to support bids.
Collaborate with the Bid Coordinator to provide accurate technical inputs for costing.
Participate in pre-bid meetings and contribute to technical queries and value engineering.
Design & Engineering Execution
Lead the electrical design of HV/MV substations (AIS and GIS), including:
Primary systems, lightning protection, earthing design, and cable routing.
Manage and coordinate external design consultants and engineering providers, ensuring compliance with project requirements, quality standards, and timelines.
Prepare and review technical specifications for key equipment such as power transformers, switchgear, CTs/VTs, and associated materials (e.g. busbars and cables).
Carry out system studies including short-circuit analysis, load flow, CT/VT sizing, and earthing calculations.
Ensure compliance with Irish Grid Code, IEC standards, and health & safety regulations.
Coordinate with civil, structural, and control & protection/telecom teams to ensure design integration.
Review supplier documentation, oversee FATs, and provide technical support during installation and commissioning (with occasional site visits).
Essential Skills & Experience
Degree in Electrical Engineering (Level 8 or higher).
7-10 years' experience in substation design.
Knowledge of EirGrid/ESB specifications and TSO/DSO procedures (desirable).
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or working towards it (Engineers Ireland), preferred.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP/DigSILENT, EPLAN, and Microsoft Office.
Strong communication skills with experience in client-facing and multidisciplinary environments.
Full driving licence.
