We are currently recruiting for Assistant Director of Nursing to join the team in The Park Nursing Home.
Position Overview
The post of Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is a senior clinical position which reports to the Director of Nursing. The role will be responsible for providing clinical leadership, managing the day‑to‑day clinical practices in the home, appropriate staff rostering, delegation and supervision, performance and development, clinical governance and assessment of risks. The ADON will work collaboratively with the DON and Healthcare Manager as part of the senior management team in the Nursing Home, providing clear communication and direction and deputising for the DON as required. The position reports to the Director of Nursing / Person in Charge.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
Ensure delivery of highest standards of nursing and social care which meet individual resident needs.
Ensure home policies and expected clinical standards are read, understood and practiced.
Conduct ward rounds, including those with GP, to achieve best clinical outcomes continually.
Review nursing documentation ensuring it reflects care and treatment required, and that assessments and care plans are completed timely.
Review residents at increased risk of pressure sores, falls and other adverse events, and clinically unwell residents, providing advice, support and assistance to ensure an appropriate management plan is in place.
Participate in handover and troubleshoot ongoing clinical or non‑clinical issues, escalating to DON as appropriate.
Ensure medication practices are carried out per An Bord Altranais guidelines, liaise with GPs and pharmacy for medication reviews and audits, guarantee competency of nursing staff in medication management, provide training during induction on prescribing, administration, documentation and electronic prescriptions.
Undertake regular MAMS medicines audits and ensure effective feedback and action plans are reviewed.
Staff Supervision & Education
Support the CNMs, provide direction, mentorship and regular communication.
Maintain visible presence in clinical areas, monitor practice, give constructive feedback and foster team cohesion.
Conduct performance appraisals and education & professional development objectives with CNMs, Staff Nurses and Care Assistants, in conjunction with the DON.
Train, educate, develop and induct nursing and care staff.
Assess education needs and implement in‑house training such as infection control, palliative and end‑of‑life care, challenging behaviour, elder abuse.
Regularly communicate with staff and develop a team ethos.
Participate in staff interviews and reviews as appropriate.
Produce rosters, collaborate with DON, monitor temporary or agency staff use and maintain compliance with agreed staffing levels.
Auditing
Conduct clinical audits, reviewing resident documentation for timely assessments and care planning.
Observe practice, monitor cleanliness and hygiene standards, and promote effective communication among nurses, carers, housekeeping and catering staff.
Carry out environmental and hand hygiene audits, implement and sustain action plans.
Perform medication audits, health & safety audits, risk assessments and develop risk management plans with DON.
Audit EpicCare documents and address issues in collaboration with CNMs, staff nurses and carers.
Residents/Relatives – Person Centred
Interact with and support residents and families daily; act as key point of contact for relatives and visitors with DON.
Deal swiftly with complaints at point of contact, escalating unresolved issues to DON, ensuring proper documentation and follow‑up.
Assist and liaise with multidisciplinary team, relatives and families.
Management and Communication
Manage day‑to‑day clinical practices in the absence of DON.
Maintain open, honest and clear communication with senior management, direct reports and all staff.
Ensure delivered care is consistently of high quality and that staff are appropriately skilled, competent, caring and conscientious.
Lead the hands‑on care team as a role model of excellent nursing care and practice.
Supervise staff, monitor drug rounds, address clinical issues, collaborate with staff, and obtain essential information daily.
Daily Activities
Check staff rosters and secure cover for absences.
Communicate effectively to ensure staff, residents and relatives perceive strong leadership.
Attend handovers and review resident progress daily.
Provide hands‑on support and development in clinical practice.
Implement Company Health and Safety Policy to safeguard staff, residents and others.
