Job title:Education CorrespondentReports to:The Editor through the News EditorLocation:The Irish Times HQ, Tara Street (Hybrid Working)Contract:3 Years, Fixed TermJob purpose:To lead and shape The Irish Times' education coverage across primary, secondary and third level, delivering authoritative, independent journalism with a strong digital-first focus. The Education Correspondent will produce original, insightful reporting that explains how education policy and practice affect the lived experience of students, parents and educators, while setting the editorial agenda for education journalism in Ireland.Main accountabilities include, but are not limited to, the following:To deliver impactful education journalism with clarity and depth.To break original stories.To provide insight and expertise, through analysis, long-reads, profiles and explainers and multimedia stories.To create audience-focused journalism that reflects the lived experience of people in education in Ireland.To shape Irish Times digital-first education coverage, working closely with editors, visual journalists and audience teams to create stories that are compelling and accessible.To work with news, politics, business and features desks.To build relationships with trusted sources, including educators, representative bodies, policymakers, students and parents.To participate in live events, podcasts, newsletters and reader Q&As.To contribute to the editorial vision of The Irish Times, proposing long-term ideas, projects and series that deepen our education coverage.To write, commission and edit education stories, including a weekly Education page.To oversee a series of annual education supplements – for which editing assistance will be provided.Skills and experience:Proven experience as a journalist with a track record in specialist reporting.An understanding of the issues, policies, structures and lived reality of education in Ireland.An ability to translate complex topics into clear and accessible narratives.An ability to generate exclusive stories and original reporting.Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.Strong digital storytelling skills, including a facility with audio, video, data and visuals.A collaborative approach and a record of working flexibly across teams.Desirable, not essentialAuthority and experience in education journalism.Experience engaging with readers through events, social media or other public platforms.Proficiency in Irish a useful but not essential skillBenefitsHealth Insurance, Pension Contribution, Media Platform & Publication Allowance, Sick Leave Cover, Laptop, Mobile Phone, Irish Times Premium Digital Subscription, Income Protection Policy, Corporate Gym Membership, Free Digital GP and Life Assurance Policy.Closing date: 5pm, 11th February 2026
