Overview
Boston Scientific Clonmel is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer on a permanent basis. The role involves researching, designing, developing, and testing medical devices with a focus on patient safety and product quality. The position is based in Clonmel, Ireland.
Key Responsibilities
Support new product development (NPD) from concept through design, prototyping, testing, and validation
Engage physicians, patients, sales reps, marketing, and others to collect feedback for devices under development
Support sustaining engineering activities, including root-cause analysis, failure investigation, and product improvements and performance
Provide integration support, ensuring compatibility between systems and performing gap analysis between BSC and new business unit’s product life cycle
Collaborate cross-functionally with process development, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams
Create specifications and perform engineering analyses
Support and analyse project scopes and schedules
Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and competition
Deliver designs that meet goals such as performance, standards, manufacturability, reliability, and cost
Generate regulatory audit-worthy design and risk management documentation
Support design for manufacturability, testability, reliability and cost requirements
Generate and maintain technical documentation, including design files, test reports, and procedures
Support verification and validation testing, regulatory compliance, and design reviews
Mentor entry-level engineers
Education & Experience
Required Qualifications:
Hons Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Minimum 5 years’ experience in the medical device industry or other similarly regulated field or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and +3 years of experience in medical device mechanical design
Experience working with international standards such as IEC 60601, IEC 61000, ISO 14708, or similar
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a hands-on design engineer in the medical device industry, responsible for new implantable and external device designs, surgical tools, access instruments, or handheld and wearable devices, materials, equipment, and processes
Demonstate broad knowledge of design controls and risk management
Hands-on experience utilizing SolidWorks 3D CAD and drafting standards (e.g., ANSI Y14.5)
Strong understanding of GD&T
Experience executing projects through commercial launch
Materials biocompatibility
Experience with animal studies, preclinical studies, cadaver lab, field research and clinical studies to evaluate usability and performance
Experience Requirements
Strong communications and time management abilities
Strong technical knowledge of mechanical design principles
Lab skills and experience with prototyping and mechanical testing setup
Expert in Failure Analysis
Adherence to requirements (product specifications, etc.)
Commitment to patient safety and product quality in line with Quality Policy and processes
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Provide technical support and leadership to technology and product development teams
Self-starter with good time management and prioritization
Experience mentoring junior engineers
