Mechanical Safety Design Professional
Job Summary:
We seek a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Safety Design Professional to join our organization focused on the design, implementation, and validation of safety systems for bridge and gantry cranes.
This role plays a critical part in ensuring compliance with international safety standards while enabling efficient and reliable crane performance.
The position may include occasional business travel within Ireland and overseas.
Responsibilities:
* Liaise with risk assessment teams to interpret safety function requirements and identify safety-related specifications (SRS), based on risk assessments and international standards.
* Support electrical and software design engineers to translate safety requirements into practical electrical design solutions, including safety circuits, PLC logic, and component selection.
* Review and validate safety-related parts of the control system and perform performance calculations using software applications.
* Generate safety function descriptions, verification reports, and compliance checklists.
* Provide support during functional testing, commissioning, and validation of safety systems.
* Assist in maintaining standard safety design templates and blocks for use across various products.
* Stay current with developments in machine safety standards, components, and best practices.
* Participate in internal design reviews and provide input on safety-related aspects of system design.
* Liaise with technical documentation departments to apply risk assessment outputs to instructions for use.
Requirements and Qualifications:
* A recognized qualification in engineering in fields such as electrical, software, or mechanical engineering, functional safety, or related disciplines.
* Knowledge of international machine safety directives or standards in safety-related parts of control systems is desirable.
* Third-level qualification or suitable experience in health and safety or related disciplines is desirable.
* Qualification as a Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) and/or Certified Expert in Functional Safety (CEFS) is an advantage.
* 5+ years' experience in regulated industries, preferably in a design/manufacturing background.
* Strong communication and influencing skills with experience communicating at all levels within an organization.
* Competency to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams of engineers to interpret safety requirements and specify risk reductions.
* Lateral thinking to achieve optimum solutions that are compliant with regulations and aligned with business goals.
