Cairn has a unique opportunity for a skilled and experienced Data Architect to join our expanding IT function with a focus on centralising our Data & Reporting. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Microsoft Synapse and Microsoft Fabric, demonstrating strong proficiency in data integration, data modelling, and ETL processes. This is a hands‑on role and is crucial in transforming data into insights that help drive business decisions.
This position reports to Cairn’s BI & Data Analytics Manager.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, develop, and maintain ETL pipelines using Azure Synapse/Microsoft Fabric.
* Ensure seamless data integration from various sources into the data warehouse.
* Optimize ETL processes for efficiency and performance.
* Design and implement a medallion data architecture aligned with business objectives, leveraging Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Delta Lake, Python (Spark), and SQL.
* Develop robust star schema data models to support business intelligence and analytics needs.
* Establish and implement data architecture, warehousing, and data management principles, standards, and best practices.
* Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and security.
* Utilise Microsoft Fabric to enhance data processing and analytics capabilities.
* Implement and manage data workflows in Microsoft Fabric for optimal performance.
* Gather and analyse business and technical requirements to design effective data solutions.
* Develop interactive and visually appealing dashboards and reports using the Microsoft BI stack.
* Use DAX to create complex calculations.
* Monitor and optimize data processing and storage solutions.
* Identify and resolve performance issues and bottlenecks.
* Work closely with BI developers, data analysts, and stakeholders to understand data requirements.
* Provide technical guidance and support to team members on best practices and methodologies.
* Mentor team members and foster a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
* Document data workflows, ETL processes, and data models.
* Generate and maintain technical documentation and provide regular updates on data engineering activities.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Education
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
Experience
* Proven experience (5+ years) as a Data Engineer or in a similar role.
* Extensive experience with Microsoft Synapse and Microsoft Fabric.
* Strong background in data integration, ETL processes, and data modelling.
Technical Skills
* Proficiency in SQL, Python, and other scripting languages for data transformation and automation.
* Hands‑on experience implementing data lakes, data lakehouses, and data warehouses.
* In‑depth knowledge of Power BI performance best practices for large datasets.
* Proven ability to design and deploy rich visualisations, scorecards, and dashboards using corporate design standards.
Soft Skills
* Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
* Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
* Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
* Attention to detail and focus on data accuracy and quality.
* Familiarity with big‑data technologies and frameworks.
* Certification in Azure Synapse, Microsoft Fabric or related technologies is a plus.
* Portfolio of Power BI work demonstrating visual and functional skills.
