GENERAL OVERVIEW:
This job provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The incumbent is expected to perform basic nursing procedures related to patient care and comfort for patients in stable condition, with knowledge of patient population needs in the assigned area. Additionally, the incumbent assists the RN in caring for acutely ill patients. They are expected to practice medical asepsis, respect patient and family dignity and privacy, and maintain objectivity during patient care. They must adhere to hospital policies and procedures and respond appropriately during emergencies. The role includes maintaining the patient/family environment and performing general unit upkeep. Effective verbal and written communication, along with proper documentation in the electronic medical record, are essential. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, receiving specific work assignments from the Charge Nurse and/or Care Team Leader, and demonstrates efficient time management. The role also involves coordinating activities such as patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides, obtains, or performs and documents: activities of daily living, skin surveys, vital signs, ambulation, specimen collection, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, blood glucose testing/monitoring, point of care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients and medical records, documenting oxygen therapy, early mobilization and ambulation protocols, assisting with exams, treatments, and procedures. (30%)
2. Participates in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives: bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding for safety (falls prevention, hand washing, isolation protocols), and maintaining a clean environment. (30%)
3. Accurately documents: vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection, treatments, and reports changes in patient conditions or concerns to nursing staff. (20%)
4. Participates in unit activities: supply stocking, equipment cleaning, checks, and retrieval. (20%)
5. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum
* High School Diploma or GED
* Limited or no experience: must attend 2 weeks of training
* Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
* Basic mathematics skills
* Basic computer skills
* CPR certification – American Heart Association
* Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance
* Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance
* Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Background Clearance
Preferred
* Recent acute care experience within last 3 years
* Currently enrolled in ASN or BSN program, with preference given to those who have completed at least one clinical rotation.
