Overview of Role
UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic is currently recruiting for the role of Clinical Nurse Manager 1 on our Day Ward, Theatre.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Work with the Theatre Manager to lead by example, ensuring proactive, patient‑centred care is delivered to a consistently high standard, following policies and guidelines.
Responsible for the efficiency of the Day Ward, leading and developing team members while monitoring quality standards.
Demonstrate commitment to the ethos and philosophy of the Sports Surgery Clinic.
Develop strategies and service goals for the Day Ward with the Theatre Manager and other Clinical Nurse Managers.
Provide professional leadership, facilitate team building and planned care.
Maintain high quality standards of service, lead proactive quality improvement and support accreditation.
Foster a shared commitment and participation among staff in change management to respond to patient health needs.
Ensure all staff are proficient in management of patient care.
Audit current nursing practice and evaluate improvements in patient care quality and patient impressions.
Support staff development.
Plan duty rosters ensuring adequate and balanced distribution of skill mix and grade.
Communication
Maintain regular communication with the Theatre Manager and other Clinical Nurse Managers on all matters related to the Day Ward.
Liaise with Nursing Administration regarding staffing levels and booking bank nurses when required.
Advocate and maintain open communication with Senior Nurse Management and the Multi‑disciplinary team on clinical and professional issues, ensuring care is delivered according to agreed protocols.
Develop good working relationships to promote seamless care.
Collaborate with the Multi‑disciplinary team to improve patient management and liaise openly with non‑clinical staff.
Act as a patient advocate, communicating, negotiating and representing patients' values and decisions in collaboration with professionals and community resources.
Promote a courteous and helpful attitude to colleagues, staff, relatives and visitors.
Overcome communication difficulties to ensure effective transfer of information.
Assist the Director of Nursing with complaint investigations, ensuring the SSC complaints procedure is followed.
Maintain IT skills to receive and transfer electronic information promptly.
Clinical Responsibility
Provide planned, individualised holistic care for patients, ensuring efficient planning and liaison with interdisciplinary teams.
Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document patient care within the unit.
Demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge and provide clinical leadership in patient care.
Participate in the development, formulation and evaluation of guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure quality service delivery.
Exercise high levels of judgement, discretion and decision making.
Protect patient confidentiality at all times.
Supervise and direct team members providing elements of care.
Comply with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and maintain safe custody of controlled drugs according to clinic policy.
Maintain safety and best practice guidelines, including Infection Control Policy, Universal Guidelines, Data Protection Act 1988, Health Safety and Welfare at Work Act 1989.
Report untoward incidents to the Theatre Manager, Clinical Nurse Managers and the Director of Nursing.
Maintain accurate reporting of near misses, incidents and complaints, coordinating risk management activities.
Keep up to date with current research, ensuring evidence‑based practice and contributing to nursing research relevant to the area.
Adhere to departmental patient identification policy at all times.
Ensure all equipment in the Day Ward is checked by an appropriate user, following clinic policy.
Demonstrate initiative and receptiveness to new ideas and development.
Conduct clinical audit, developing action plans post‑audit.
Ensure patient care is current best practice.
Education and Staff Development Responsibility
Educate all nursing and allied staff, including orientation of new staff to develop excellent work practices.
Provide mentorship and educational programmes for staff within the speciality.
Support and participate in education and in‑service programmes for all staff.
Ensure team members have completed mandatory training and report non‑compliance.
Promote self‑care and wellness through patient education, health promotion and training.
Work with the Theatre Manager to conduct all staff annual appraisals.
Be prepared to undertake additional training to enhance knowledge and skills within the specialty.
Self‑Development Responsibility
Demonstrate interest in advances in patient care management by attending in‑service programmes, lectures, seminars and staff conferences.
Participate in study days focused on general and advanced practice.
Engage in personal development planning and continuous professional education.
Participate in clinic committees and interdepartmental meetings.
Ensure adherence to clinic policies and NMBI guidelines.
Assist the Theatre Manager or deputy in maintaining excellence in patient care, supporting overall department management.
Perform other duties appropriate to the post as assigned by the Theatre Manager and Director of Nursing.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by An Bord Alteranais.
At least five years post‑registration nursing experience (full‑time or equivalent part‑time) in an acute hospital setting, with a minimum of three years recent experience in a relevant area.
Hold a management qualification, or be in pursuit of one or willing to undertake one.
Previous management experience is an advantage.
Well‑developed leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills.
Computer skills.
Orthopaedic experience.
